Square Aspects 101
Natal Chart of Harriet Beecher Stowe

Welcome to Square Aspects 101. You'll find this the third post and our Aspects 101 Series. This seriescovers major and minor aspects, the angles formed between planets.

Let's get started with Square Aspects 101.

Square Aspects 101 - What are they?

First of all, a square represents two or more planets 90° apart. If you have the Sun at 2° Libra and Saturn at 2° Cancer or 2° Capricorn, the Sun is said to square Saturn. (Always say the faster moving planets first as in Sun square Saturn, not Saturn square the Sun.) And, of course, as with all aspects, it's not just 90° exact that makes the aspect. There is an 'orb' of influence.

What is the orb for Squares?

Orb of aspect for Conjunctions plus
Orbs for Conjunctions and other aspects, minor and major.

Understand, an orb represents the degrees allowed for the aspect to 'act'. In the case of the square, the orb may be tight - 8° either side. Or, it may be wider, 10° either side for the planets and up to 12 for the luminaries*.

In the example above above showing Harriet Beecher Stowe's chart , all the squares fall into orbs within 1-9°s. But if Pluto was 28° Pisces and Neptune at 2° Capricorn, we would still say that Neptune was square Pluto because it is within 4° orb. With aspects, always count in degrees and be ready to recognize an 'out of sign' aspect.

Take a look at my settings for the aspects in my Io Time Cycles Software program. You can see the orbs are adjustable, and I like them wide, especially if the luminaries are involved.

The Key to Understanding any Aspect

Richard Idemon taught that the aspects are like table legs. Pick one 'leg' up and all the other legs of the table will follow. No exceptions. For example, if you have feel a strong work ethic and are ambitious to accomplish an authentic goal, (Saturn) you may awaken your intense focus and drive to destroy anything not working and start all over again from scratch (Pluto). You can not do one without the others when they link by aspect, even if that means expressing one quality and pushing the other down into the unconscious. (not the best solution in the long run as what we resist persists!)

Finding the Squares in the Chart Screen Shot 2019-01-24 at 6.46.30 pm

As you practice looking at a variety of charts, your eye will learn to pick up aspects easily. Even the out-of-sign ones. If you create charts without the 'lines' drawn in the middle, you will learn to see the aspects faster, not relying on the crutch, which doesn't let you practice seeing into the chart quite the same way. Meanwhile, you can double check with the aspectarian, the graph that comes with the natal chart. It shows us how all the planets and points are connected by aspect via symbol. Here is the aspectarian for the example chart.

What does the Square Mean?

Now, let's explore the meaning of square. This aspect links two or more planets or points that fall between 90°s plus or minus 10°s either side. The popular keyword for the square is “challenge”. This comes from the linking of signs that are not of the same polarity or element.

The square aspect has a negative connotation with adjectives like “trouble making”, “unfortunate”, “evil” and “vile”.  In Horary astrology the square indicates difficulties, loss, set backs and prohibitive costs.  Modern texts smooth over the delineation somewhat with euphemistic adjectives like “obstacles, resistance and blocks”.  Any way you slice it, at first glance the square means hard work.

It would be surprising to find an astrologer that could catalogue the joys of a Moon square Saturn.  What could possibly be advantageous about a struggle to secure basic needs like love, nurturing and emotional safety?  There is a certain challenge in painting a happy face on the side of a square.  Not may will believe it.

However, without conflict and struggle, a story becomes boring.  Characters are not provoked or stretched and they never grow into their full potential.

Square Aspects = Contrast; Contrast = Awareness

Without squares, there is less contrast, no sitting on the edge of the seat, waiting in anticipation for the next action. Squares are the goads that push the hero into her quest and keep her evolving, mind. body and spirit.  They are part of what makes us feel accomplished and wise.

In this way, squares are challenges and contrasts in life that offer new opportunity and adventure. Without them, we may not know what we really want. What we are truly capable of.

Contrast is essential to decision, but once the decision is made, if you will turn your full attention to your decision and do your best to achieve a vibrational match with that decision, in a very short order, the Universe will go to work in helping you to achieve whatever it is that you are wanting. - Abraham-Hicks Quotes

Modality and Form of Motion

Squares symbolize conflict partially because of their distance from each other. In the 90 degree aspect, planets are usually in the same modality.  They all have a common means of motion, but what they are moving towards is usually different.

The cardinal signs all move with a sense of action and initiation.  What they want to initiate, however, is not the same thing at all.  Aries takes action that leads to self awareness, self will and triumph.  Cancer, 90 degrees from Aries, takes action that leads to emotional union, shared pain and merging.  Libra, 90 degrees from Cancer, takes action that leads to shared beauty, intellectual values and social pleasure.  Capricorn, 90 degrees away from Libra, takes action that leads to greater authority, responsibility and achievement.  And back to Aries, 90 degrees from Capricorn, who could care less about responsibility and the limits it entails.

Square aspects imply meaningful conflicts and contrasts requiring effort, experience and introspection to resolve.  Usually they are difficult to ignore.  They generally grab our attention in trickster-like ways, yet can be beneficial, creative and fertile.

Forget about Easy or Hard

Remember to drop value judgments around the aspects. Squares make life neither good nor bad, easy or hard. What they do is link planets together for potential growth, awareness and evolution.

Furthermore, the aspect's expression isn't set in stone. It changes as we evolve. A child with Mars square Pluto may see their parents or teachers as angry, controlling and scary at times. They might experience the Pluto drive for power and control as bullying at school or, conversely, a charismatic blessing. Eventually, they can become both the Mars (healthy aggression) and Pluto (empowerment) taking responsibility for their own expression to bring fulfillment to themselves and others.

Square Aspects 101 Example Charts

Finally, let's look at some positive examples of squares in the natal chart.

In the feature chart above you can see that Harriet Beecher Stowe, abolitionist and author of thirty novels including Uncle Tom's Cabin, had a near exact Sun conjunct Jupiter with both square Pluto. Her identity (Sun) hinged on Jupiter (freedom, expansion, joy) and Pluto (collective issues of power and control).  How she expressed this square, a potentially challenging aspect rich with contrast is summed up in this quote.

"I feel now that the time is come when even a woman or a child who can speak a word for freedom and humanity is bound to speak... I hope every woman who can write will not be silent."

StevenSpielberg_natalNext, let's look at Steven Spielberg, the most popular directors and producers in Hollywood's history. Note the square between the Moon and Saturn/Pluto, a powerful example of emotional challenges and contrast.

It can often suggest major contrast in the early environment, especially with the Moon intercepted in Scorpio.

From Wikepeadia -

Spielberg  said he suffered from acts of anti-Semitic prejudice and bullying: "In high school, I got smacked and kicked around. Two bloody noses. It was horrible."[25][26][27]

Also notice the square between Mars (action) and Neptune (visual arts and film). With his creative vision, he takes extreme and sometimes horrific emotional, physical and environmental conditions (Moon/Pluto/Mars) and brings them to the attention of the collective (Saturn) via the cinema (Neptune). Consider some of his most venerated accomplishments: The Color Purple (1985), Empire of the Sun (1987), Schindler's List (1993), Amistad (1997) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). What a powerful example of working with contrast.

Working with Contrast

Contrast starts to loose its power over us when we become aware of the energies, the vibrations involved.

Then, instead of feeling done wrong by or blaming, we can honor all the planets involved in creative, expansive ways. It's about engaging with and/AND, not either/or.

The bottom line is, if you think it’s either/or, it will be, so use your awareness to pave new thoughts with and/AND. Freedom AND commitment. Money AND soul. Dream Job AND independence. Security AND love. Accomplishment AND spiritual life. Power AND creativity.

Summary - Square Aspects 101

To conclude, a square between two or more planets means they are scripted to dialog with each other. They are connected so that if one is active and ‘doing something’ the connected planet wakes up too. They are partners, of sorts, always and forever. Finding the And/and to the squares in your chart can harmonize and strengthen your desires, smooth out any kinks in your vibe and launch new successes, over and over again.

Translating and Collecting the Lights

Girls in the Sunlight by Phillip Leslie Hale

If you've been exploring astrology for a while, you might have come across two terms: Translating and Collecting the Lights. Let's look at the definitions and see how we use these aspect techniques in chart interpretations, and to amp up your manifesting practice.

Translating and Collecting the Lights Definitions

William Lilly, one of the most influential astrologer of the 17th Century, literally wrote the book on this, translating from ancient Islamic and the works of Al-Qabisi, astrologer and mathematician who wrote and taught from 930 - 967 approximately.  The Islamic astrologers made great advances in astrology while the art/science when underground in Europe for centuries. Lilly focused on all aspects of astrology in his translations, but is  best known today for his work in Horary. His definitions of translating and collecting the lights are actually really helpful.

Translation of Lights

Translation of light... is when a light* Planet separates from a more weighty* one, and presently joins to another more heavy... --Excerpt from William Lilly - Christian Astrology I, p.111

In modern terms, this is when a faster-moving planet (like the moon, sun, Mercury) separates from an aspect to a slower-moving planet. Let's use the example Chart A below to demonstrate. The faster moving planet is the Moon. She makes a trine to Venus and immediately applies to Saturn and then Pluto and then the South Node. This happens while still within orb of the planets she separates from.

Collection of Lights

...When as the two principall Significators doe not behold one another, but both cast their severall Aspects to a more weighty* Planet than themselves... --Excerpt from William Lilly - Christian Astrology I, p.126

In modern terms, think of it as two planets not in aspect to each other but both applying to a third planet. The third planet collects their lights creating a relationship between them that was not obvious by major aspect. See the sample Chart B.

Practical Application of Translating and Collecting the Lights

MG_2601.gluten-free-fudge.brownies.ingredientsWhat translating and collecting the lights means in the natal chart is a blending of energies that otherwise wouldn't be connected, or connected in such a strong way.

Think of it as making a cake. In the bowl, you have butter, sugar, chocolate and eggs, all in separate lumps. Then in comes the spoon, the planet translating or collecting, and the separate energies are mixed. Suddenly, you have a blend.

The moon, being so fast moving, translates the lights often, and we will see more of it in 2019. Check out how this looks via the astro clock - Chart Example  A.Frosted-Brownies-photo-picture-recipe-1

Translation of Lights Example

In chart example A, we see the Translation of Lights. The Moon in Taurus trines Venus, then Saturn, then Pluto and then the S Node, bringing these energies together as if in exact orb of conjunction. On this day, whatever you have in Earth signs, or what houses are involved, will carry this blend of relationship (Venus), strength/pruning/culling (Saturn) complete transformation (Pluto) and blast from the past (South Node). The house(s) in the natal chart with 9° to 26° Capricorn are the focus in this case.

TranslatingTheLights
Example Chart A - Moon Translating the Lights

Collection of Lights

Below, in Example B, we see that the rulers of the 9th and 11th houses (Moon and Mars) do not form a major aspect - conjunction, sextile, square, opposition or trine. The 30° semi-sextile isn't major, and it is separating in any case, not inadmissible in Horary Astrology. Only aspects the Moon applies to counts there. But, look how Jupiter collects the lights. He pulls Mars into an applying square, and the moon into an applying trine. This creates a relationship between Moon and Mars, via a 'third party'.

Lilly puts it like this:

As many times you see two fall at variance, and of themselves cannot think of any way of accommodation, when suddenly a neighbour or friend accidentally reconciles all differences, to the content of both parties: And this is called Collection. -Excerpt from William Lilly - Christian Astrology I, p.126

Jupiter collects the lights of Moon and Mars, bringing them together.
Jupiter collects the lights of Moon and Mars, bringing them together.

Leveraging the Translation and Collection of Lights

If you find this translation or collection of lights by aspect, know that it is a time where planets that seem unconnected are actually working together in powerful ways. You can leverage that energy by looking at the focus in your own natal chart, or the chart of clients.

If you the Translation or Collection of lights in your natal chart, you can 'count' on a stronger relationship between the planets involved. This might lead you to better understand of dichotomies or contrast in your chart, or to the discovery of core values you didn't know you had.

If Example Chart B were a natal chart, we would say that contrast between moon and Mars (at variance) can be solved by activating Jupiter, the planet collecting the lights. Perhaps heated emotions (moon/Mar) are harmonized by honoring the core values of Jupiter in Libra - equal relationships, travel with a friend, study buddies, sharing talents and resources, being magnanimous, shared, refined settings.

Sextiles 101

SalOFSolomon_astropattern
Sextiles fall 60 degrees apart. This example chart has 6 sextiles forming the Star of David or Seal of Solomon as it is known in esoteric astrology. You don't see it often, and it requires a Splash chart pattern, and two grand trines, but it is quite a delight for those born July 29/30, 2013, and other years, of course.

Welcome to Sextiles 101. You'll find this the second post and our Aspects 101 Series. Over the course of these posts, we cover major and minor aspects, the angles formed between planets.

Let's get started.

Sextiles 101 - What are they?

First of all, a sextile represents two or more planets 60° apart. If you have the Sun at 2° Libra and Saturn at 2° Leo or 2° Sagittarius, the sun sextiles Saturn. But, that's not all. There is, as with all aspects, a degree of 'orb'.

What is the orb for Sextiles?

Orb of aspect for Conjunctions plus

Understand, an orb represents the degrees allowed for the aspect to 'work'. In the case of the sextile, the orb may be tight - 5° either side. Or, it may be wider, 8° either side for the *luminaries.

In the example above above showing the Star of David pattern, all the sextiles fall into a tight orb, within 1-4°s. But if Pluto was 28° Sagittarius, it would still be sextile to Neptune at 2° Pisces because it is within 4° orb.

In this example, if you feel something on an emotional level (the moon) you will automatically awaken the sensitivity and nebulousness of Neptune and the call to adventure of Jupiter as both are sextile the moon. You can not do one without the others when they link by aspect, even if that means expressing one quality and pushing the other down into the unconscious. (not the best solution in the long run)

Finding the Sextiles

As you practice looking at a variety of charts, your eye will learn to pick up sextiles easily. Even the out-of-sign ones. If you create charts without the 'lines' drawn in the middle, you will learn to see the aspects faster, without relying on the crutch, which doesn't let you practice seeing the chart. Meanwhile, you can double check with the aspectarian, the graph that comes with the natal chart. It shows us how all the planets and points are connected by aspect via symbol. Here is the aspectarian for the example chart.

What does the Sextile Mean?

Itzchak_Tarkay
Watercolor by Itzchak Tarkay

Now, let's explore the meaning of sextile. This aspect links two or more planets or points that fall between 60°s plus or minus 5-8°s either side. The popular keyword for the sextile is “opportunity”. This comes from the positive nature of the aspect that usually links signs that fall in the same polarity,Earth & Water or Fire & Air. Sextiles also require us to be alert. An opportunity may arise between planets in sextile although we have to utilize it in some way. Even though sextiles represent cooperation and empathy, the nature of the planets involved must be considered as well as the individuals unique way of expressing them together.

If Mars is in a sextile aspect to Pluto, it does not automatically imply that one has transformed their primitive assertive drives in such a way that they are strong yet sensitive, powerful but not dominating. It may just as likely indicate that when they feel assertive or takes action (Mars) they also feel the power of the primeval world move through them in an wave of dramatic and life changing energy (Pluto). It is important to acknowledge the role of the sextile to bring planets together for a single purpose or cause. We decide how that combined energy will express.

Forget about Easy or Hard

Straight away, let's drop the value judgments around the aspects. Sextiles make life neither good nor bad, easy or hard. What they do is link them together for potential opportunity.

Furthermore, the aspect's expression isn't set in stone. It changes as we evolve. A child with Mars sextile Pluto may find their parents strict, controlling, scary at times. As they mature, they might experience the Pluto drive for power and control as bullying at school or, conversely, a charismatic blessing. Eventually, they can become both the Sun and Pluto, taking responsibility for their own power and drives, using the strength to bring fulfillment to themselves and others.

Dalia-LamaThe Questions to Ask of the Sextile - An Example Chart

The above chart of the Dali Lama has multiple sextiles. See if you can identify them all by looking at the chart first before checking the aspectarian.

If we take just Sun sextile Neptune, we can ask, do they have compatible desires?  What happens when these table legs come up? The sun wants to shine, to be seen as distinct, lighting things up via the sign and house it is in. In this case, in Cancer, nurturing, empathic, creative and fiercely protective of loved ones in the house of Spirit, compassion and inner journeys. This is sextile to Neptune, ruler of the 12th and connection to the divine.

We all can't be the Dali Lama (or can we?) but what better way to express these energies than being a spiritual leader.

Compare with Mahatma Gandhi who had Sun in the 12th house opposite Neptune in the 6th.

Working with Contrast

If there are contrasting drives and goals in sextile to each other, instead of honoring one of the planets and resisting or repressing the other - instead of making it either/or - you engage with and/AND. Instead of creativity (Sun) or spirituality (Neptune), find creativity AND spirituality. If you are thinking partnered or serving others, play with the idea of partnered AND serving others.

The bottom line is, if you think it’s either/or, it will be, so use your awareness to pave new thoughts with and/AND. Freedom AND commitment. Money AND soul. Dream Job AND independence. Security AND love. Accomplishment AND spiritual life. Power AND creativity.

Summary

To conclude, a sextile between two or more planets means they are scripted to dialog with each other. They are connected so that if one is active and ‘doing something’ the connected planet wakes up too. They are partners, of sorts, always. Conjunctions 101

The Dinner Party by Veronica Holland
The Dinner Party by Veronica Holland

Conjunctions 101 is the first post and our Aspects 101 Series. Over the course of these posts, we will cover all the major aspects, the angular relationships between planets and points used in astrology. Then, we'll go on to explore the minor ones. No stone left unturned. We're going to walk through this study step by step.

Let's get started.

Conjunctions 101 - What are they?

First of all, a conjunction represents two or more* planets in the same place. If you have the Sun at 2 Libra and Saturn at 2 Libra, they are conjunct. But, that's not all. There is, as with all aspects, a degree of 'orb'.

What is the orb for conjunctions?

Orb of aspect for Conjunctions plus
Orbs for Conjunctions and other aspects, minor and major.

Technically, an orb shows the distance in degrees allowed for the aspect. In the case of the conjunction, the orb may be tight - 8 degrees either side. Or, it may be wide, 10 to 12 degrees apart.

In the example above, the conjunction is exact. Both sit at 2 degrees Libra. But what if the Sun was 26 Virgo and Saturn 2 Libra? Is it still a conjunction?

Yes! They are only 8 degrees apart and fall within the orb of a conjunction.

Also, an interesting fact, in ancient times, astrologers only considered same sign aspects. They would not call the Sun in Virgo and Saturn in Libra a conjunction, even if they were only 1 degree apart.

But now, we have refined the process. Take a look at my settings for the aspects in my Io Software program. You can see the orbs are adjustable, and I like them wide.

Aspectarian for finding the conjunctionsThe Key to Understanding any Aspect

Remember this: aspects are like table legs. Pick one up and they all will follow. No exceptions. In this example, if you seek to shine as an individual (Sun) you will automatically awaken the containment or authority of Saturn. You can not do one without the others when they link by aspect, even if that means expressing one and pushing the other down into the unconscious.

Finding the Conjunctions

As you practice looking at a variety of charts, your eye will learn to pick up conjunctions easily. Even the out of sign ones. Meanwhile, you can double check with the aspectarian, the graph that shows us how all the planets and points are connected. Here is the aspectarian for the example chart.

What does the Conjunction Mean?

Andrea Kowch art
Painting by Andrea Kowch - like a conjunction, sitting side by side but having different desires.

Now, let's explore the meaning of conjunctions. This aspect links two or more planets or points that fall between 0 to a 10+ degrees of each other.  They sit next to each other at the same table.  Sometimes, they site in each other's laps!

A planet conjunct another planet or angle in the chart unites the energies* of the bodies involved. It brings them together in such a way that it may be difficult to distinguish one from the other.  They can become like Siamese twins, distinct drives yet forever joined.

Are Conjunctions Easy or Hard?

Straight away, let's drop the value judgments around the aspects. Conjunctions make life neither good nor bad, easy or hard. What they do is connect.

Furthermore, the aspect's expression isn't set in stone. It changes as we evolve. A child with Sun conjunct Saturn my find their parents strict, controlling. As they mature, they might experience the Saturn drive for self-sufficiency and accomplishment as a taskmaster at school or a other authority figure. Eventually, they can become both the Sun and Saturn, taking responsibility for their own creative expression.

The Questions to Ask of the Conjunctions - An Example Chart

Conjunctions_ExampleThis is a chart of a woman with multiple conjunctions in the same sign (Libra) and mixed signs (Virgo and Libra) in the same house. We call either combination a *stellium and it indicates a concentration of focus. FIY, she is a couples counselor by profession. Can you spot all the conjunctions in this chart before reading on? Stop now, and give it a go.

Did you get them all? Check the aspectarian above to be sure, but in the 7th house alone, Moon is conjunct Mercury (out of sign). Also, Venus, Venus, Sun, Saturn and Pluto are conjunct within 10 degrees.

If we take just Sun and Saturn, we can ask, do they have compatible desires?  Sun in Libra has qualities of poise, artistic appreciation and the drive to connect.  Conjunct Venus augments those desires, but Saturn in Libra adds something else. Saturn's desire for autonomy can clash with the Sun who wants to bask not only in her own light but the light of others. Saturn may prefer to be alone, or, in the search for the 'perfect' partner throw out other counter-intentions. Is anyone good enough, for example...

Because this conjunction brings together different desires, it can seem like insurmountable contrast.

Working with Contrast

The first thing to do when faced with contrasting drives and goals is to give yourself credit. You are aware of it.

Second, instead of honoring one of the planets and resisting or repressing the other - instead of making it either/or -  you engage with and/AND. Instead of creativity (Sun) or work (Saturn), find creativity AND work. If you are thinking partnered or self-sufficient, play with the idea of partnered AND self-sufficient.

The bottom line is, if you think it’s either/or, it will be, so use your awareness to pave new thoughts with and/AND. Freedom AND commitment. Money AND soul. Dream Job AND independence. Security AND love. Accomplishment AND spiritual life. Power AND creativity.

Summary

To conclude, a conjunction between two or more planets means they are scripted to dialog with each other. They are connected so that if one is active and ‘doing something’ the connected one wakes up too. They are partners, of sorts, always. Finding the And/and to the conjunctions in your chart can harmonize your desires, bringing pure magic to your manifesting.

What the YOD?

YOD Example
Here the YOD is Moon (150 degree inconjunct) Saturn (60 degree sextile) Mars (150 degree incojunct) Moon.

The YOD aka Finger of God aka Finger of Fate

First know the YOD aspect pattern consists of two planets sextile each other and inconjunct (150 degrees) to a third planet sitting on the inverse midpoint. If you connect the dots, you come up with a lovely isosceles triangle. AKA YOD or Finger of Fate/God.

the yod aspect

Check the examples to the left. The RED lines represent the inconjunct / quincunx (150 degree apart) and the green lines represents the sextile (60 degree apart). You can check your natal chart right now. If you have two (or more in some cases) planets 60 degrees apart AND 150 degrees to a singular third planet, bingo, you have a YOD.

The feature image above shows off the transiting YOD in late November 2018, perfected when the Moon reaches 7 degrees of Leo.

Remember, there are a lot of other chart patterns every bit as exciting as the Yod. For example the grand trine, which is three planets in the trine aspect of 120 degrees, (green lines) or squares and oppositions (red line).

How to read the YOD

So, what does the YOD mean? Here we can review the basic tenants of astrology to unravel it:

  • Planets are the actors
  • Signs are the costumes they wear
  • Houses are the stage or sets they act on
  • Aspects are the scripts/dialog the actors have with each other.

No matter what aspect, a dialog forms between the planets involved. The planets connect, like table legs (as Richard Idemon would say). Pick one up and anything in aspect comes up with it. In other words if you have Moon sextile Mars and get emotional, Mars energy will be there instantly. You may want to stand your ground or fight or take charge. The reverse is true too. If you take charge or get in a fight you might feel very deeply. Battle might be nurturing to you!  With the YOD, you'll find three planets connected, scripted to interact. Interestingly, they will all be a different element and a different modality. It's often not a comfortable match, to start with.

YOD Examples

Let's imagine Mercury sextiles Mars and they are both inconjunct Neptune. If you activate Mercury by communicating, you automatically wake up the other two planets. The energy of Mercury sweeps along to Mars (action) and shoots toward Neptune to express. Ideally, the apex planet channels the energy of the other two.

How might this work out in real life? Let's say you're on a date and Mercury is talking, connecting and asking questions, having a great time. But doing so wakes up assertive go-getter Mars  who wants 'a little less conversation; a little more action'. Mars gets bored and pushes in. At this point the dialog might turn to adventure, MMA, sports or stories about all the amazing things you've done. While that's going on, mystical Neptune stirs. Now things get dreamy, the wine flows and all the talk is about meditation, art, film or higher guidance. This can lead to a tug-o-war over who gets to express. It's a big job for the apex planet to orchestrate it all. A first date might have trouble handling it all.

Summary

To sum it up, the Yod means three, or more, of your planets are in dialog with each other and it's up to the apex planet to harmonize and express the energy. It's called the finger of fate or God because without awareness, and experience, it can be a source or contrast and challenge. Wherever it sits in the chart, (what houses or areas of life are activated) describes where a pattern of behavior or external events occur.

But 'fate' doesn't control you. Your thoughts do. Through awareness, you can learn to turn your YOD to gold.

Members, if you want to chat about your YOD on the forum, I've just made a new thread there.

I'd love to hear how you handle your natal and transiting YODS.

Parallel Aspects

Parallel AspectsHi Everyone, curious about Parallel Aspects?

Technically, that's 'Parallel and Contra-Parallel of Declination' aspects.

It's a mouthful, but I have a quick video tutorial to cover the astronomy involved. Don't worry if it doesn't sink in straight away. There won't be a quiz. We'll cover questions in the comments, and focus more on the practical results of having a parallel or contra-parallel aspect.

Parallel Aspects Defined

The Parallel Aspect of Declination is formed between two or more planets with the same declination or distance north or south of the ecliptic. If the planets are both North or both South of the ecliptic, the parallel aspect is read as a conjunction. If they are the same declination but one is North and one is South, then the contra-parallel is read as a 180 degree opposition.

using parallel aspects in astrologyThese aspects are strongest when the orb is kept to 1 degree or less, so unlike a square where we allow up to 10 degrees of orb, the parallels are allowed 1 or maybe 1.25 degrees.

Why are Parallel Aspects Important?

Parallels connect planets that may not otherwise be in aspect. They also magnify the intensity of any other aspect between the two planets or points involved. So if you have Mars sextile Saturn AND Mars parallel Saturn, you have a whole lot of Mars/Saturn contact going on.

The best way to get a handle on this is by example so everyone can get out their chart. (You can upload yours in the gallery, if you are a GVA Circle Member or Registered for the free, Open Membership, if you want to share, ask or discuss.) When you get your chart up you will see a list called 'declination' on the ‘additional tables (PDF)' option. If you are using another program or an ephemeris, look for the list of daily ‘declinations’.

screen-shot-2016-11-21-at-3-20-42-pmThey will look like this: 20°35’27” N (the N is for North. North is also represented by a + and South by a -). Make a list of any planets that are within one degree of declination + or - in your natal chart. If both are + or both – they are parallel. If one is + and the other – they are contra-parallel.

Examples

For example I have the Pluto at 23°17’46” N declination and the Jupiter at 23°21′ 7″ N so Jupiter and Pluto are parallel. They form wide sextile aspect by sign, so this parallel is an additional emphasis, pulling them into closer contact. Make sense?

We use the parallel and contra-parallel to discover planetary connections. It's also important in transits.

To demonstrate, here is a list or outer planet declination right now. Check to see if these are in aspect (1 degree orb) to any of your natal degrees.

Online Ephemeris

Also, check your declination list for natal parallels and contra-parallels. They also progress and can be used in return charts, horary, event charts, etc. If you use them in your synastry chart comparisons, you'll find connections otherwise missed.

Give a shout if you want some help. I or other declination savvy GVA'ers will lend a hand.

You can take a screenshot of your declination list from astro.com and post that in the gallery too.

See you in the comments.

Aspect Patterns

aspectpattern1Hi everyone, there are a lot of beliefs floating around out there about what aspect patterns mean. Some definitions are misleading. I'm here to set a few things straight.

First up, aspect patterns are still just ASPECTS

Planets and points connected by mathematical degrees. And aspect pattern ties together three or more planets into a geometrical shape. They are CONNECTED to each other. Scripted to interact.

Remember:
Planets are energy - the actors.
Signs are expression - the costumes the actors wear.
Houses are environments - the stage on which the actor struts her stuff.
Aspects are the scripts - the dialog between actors who are connected.

More Aspect Pattern Points

Second point, think of aspects like table legs. If you pick up one leg of a table, all the others come up with it. In a T-Square aspect pattern between Moon, Venus and Mars, if you activate the Moon (pick up that leg of the table), Venus and Mars (the other table legs) ARE ACTIVATED TOO. This applies to all aspects, recognized patters or not. I learned this from the amazing astrologer, Richard Idemon.

Third, aspect pattern are neither good nor bad. They are energy, just as it is. How we utilize the energy is what matters.

Fourth, aspects patterns are not immutable fate. Even the YOD! They are the default. With awareness, you can used them for your own well being and abundance. They don't 'use' you, unless you let them.

Fifth, do consider the Ascendant and Midheaven in the aspect pattern, as long as you remember they are not planets/energies as such but modes of expression/environments. If the Asc is part of a T-Square, you will likely use it, or the Descendant, to express the two planets that are involved. The Asc becomes the conflict resolution or filter for the energy.

Summary

ANY aspect between two or more planets means they are scripted to dialog with each other. They are connected so that if one is active and 'doing something' the connected one wakes up too. They are partners, of sorts.

Let's look at some real life examples. I won't go through all the patterns as once you get the idea, you can work out the meaning yourself. I will cover three favorites of mine: the Grand Trine, T-Square and Yod.

I'm choosing examples that are famous and infamous, to give you contrast and bring home that the patterns don't mean 'good or bad', they are energy for use to put to use.

Aspect Patterns - the Grand Trine

peterkurten

The Grand Trine consists of three or more planets trine to each other to form an equilateral triangle. Trine aspects are 120 degrees of the circle, connecting planets and points of the same element. An orb (leeway) allowed is 10-12 degrees. * NOTE 28 Aires is trine to 28 Leo Trine to 28 Saggo, Trine to 28 Aries creating a Grand Fire Trine, BUT, it might be 28 Aries, 3 virgo, 22 Saggo. Aspect patters that include different elements are said to be out of sign.*

People think the Grand Trine is all kinds of karmic money in the bank. They use words like lucky, fortuitous and abundant. If it's a Grand Fire Trine they are super creative visionaries, Grand Earth, incredible with money and finances, Grand Air Trine, eloquent writers and speakers, Grand Water Trine, sensitive, psychic healers. Lucky Lucky Lucky.

Examples of Aspect Patterns - Trine

Sometimes this is absolutely true when the individual is raised with love and fostered to develop their many abilities. What the Grand Trine can also mean is THEIR vision of the world is so beautiful that the reality of their life is a devastating contrast that crushes them psychologically. It happens. Best leave the notions of luck and good karma out of the equation when reading a chart with a grand trine, until you sus what the client has 'done' with it. Trines are slippery slopes, and inherently lazy. There isn't much to get the energy moving, unless the person feels the ecstasy ... or agony of how it fits in their life. Mahatma Gandhi has a Grand Fire Trine and his creative vision and charisma changed the lives of millions of people.

Peter Kürten

But then there's Peter, Kürten, aka the Vampire of Düsseldorf, who was a serial murderer, rapists and, well, bad guy all around. Behold his beautiful Grand Earth Trine involving the Asc/Neptune, Uranus and the Moon. He used the energy in very macabre ways. Kürten was the 3rd born in a poverty stricken family of 13 children where he witnessed his father beat and rape his mother and sister. I won't go on. Just imaging how this 'heaven on earth' grand trine, Neptune on the Asc, Venus ruled sensitive child handled it. No DoCS or social services to the rescue. He would run away from home and be dragged back. The unfairness of the world would have been crippling psycholoically. And it was. He murdered his first victims when he was 9 years old. Kürten was executed on 2 July 1931 by guillotine in Cologne.

The point is we don't idealize aspect patterns. They aren't magical indications of greatness, or even difficulty. They show how planetary energies are connected. If you have a terrible home life like Kurten, and your Moon (home, mother family) is connected to Uranus (unusual, innovative, genius) connected to Neptune (longing for reunion with the divine/madness) on the Asc (outer expression) you might just find pleasure and nurturing in bizarre ways that control life (by taking it away).

Aspect Patterns - the YOD

The Yod aspect pattern is the name for an astrological aspect between three (or more) plants or points where two planets are 60 degrees sextile and both 150 degrees inconjunct (or quincunx) to a third. This is one of my favorite patterns, not just because I have two. They combine planets/energies that are a different modality, polarity and element. ie, nothing gets along easily, at first. Check out Will Smith's YOD.

willsmith

With the Yod Aspect Pattern - Note WHERE the Finger is Pointing

In Will's case, it's to a 10th house Saturn. Ambitious man. REALLY ambitious, and competitive. It's where all the energy is headed, pulling from the fuel of Jupiter in the 3rd (words that impact LARGE arenas, and Neptune in the 5th, the illusion of the theater/creative drive, imaginations, deception (acting). There is contrast! Saturn is grounded in the real world. Jupiter is all about the vision. Neptune, the ideal. What Jupiter and Neptune 'see' is perfect, imagined without flaw. When it is manifested in reality, aka Saturn, the vision is no longer infinite and perfect. It becomes real, hence flawed. The only way to deal with this dichotomy is to find a balance. Allow both imagined perfection and 'reality' that falls short.

The YOD in Action

The cool thing about this Yod is that it pulls in Mercury by opposition, so will can achieve his ambition by LEARNING (Mercury). He actually says, 'I have a moderate amount of talent. But what I do know about is skill development. That's where I excel with ridiculous amounts of time/work.' He claims to have a 'sickening work ethic.' Can you see it? Can you imagine what he would do if he didn't have the creative outlet he has gained?

To sum it up, the Yod means that three or more planets are in dialog with each other and it's up to the pointing planet to harmonize the energy. It's called the finger of fate or God/gods because for most people this is a default. Wherever it sits in the chart, (what houses or areas of life are activated) describes where a pattern of behavior or external events occur. More on the YOD here ...

Aspect Patterns - the T-Square

In this aspect pattern, three or more planets (of or near the same modality) are 90 square each other and two, or more, are 180 opposition. The orb is 10 to 12 degrees. There is often tension, and contrast in this aspect, but it MOVES energy. There is a feeling of 'forced growth,' unlike the trine.

oprahwinfrey

We hear that T-Squares are trouble, right? Meet Oprah Winfrey, according to Wikipedia, the "Queen of All Media", the richest African-American of the 20th century, the greatest black philanthropist in American history, and is currently North America's first and only multi-billionaire of African/American descent. Several assessments regard her as the most influential woman in the world. In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama and honorary doctorate degrees from Duke and Harvard. Harvard!

Yes, she has a Grand Air Trine with an exalted Mercury trine Jupiter trine Neptune, but check out the T-Square. Mars square Pluto (god of war and god of death, opposite Mercury square Mars. That could be a whole lot of anger, aggression and darkness. She grew up in extreme poverty, born to a teenage single mom, was molested by family members from the age of 9 and had a baby who died shortly after birth when she was 14 ... but unlike Kürten, she didn't become the Vampire of Mississippi.

She overcame incredible adversity both personally and culturally, to be something 'more than' in the world. Note the Grand Air Trine (communication) is in Earth Houses (money, work, career). She was not lazy with this aspect pattern and the T-Square helped her there.

Focusing on the T-Square, the third house Mars can suggest anger/violence and square Pluto in the 12th can bring a whole collective of prejudices, race, gender, creed ...opposite that exalted Mercury. It's like she was a true alchemist, turning a mix of mud, s**t and old carcasses to gold.

Look for the 'Empty' Leg of the T-Square

When you look at the T-square, note the 'empty' leg (where if there WAS a planet there in Taurus, it would be a Fixed Grand Cross). T-Square people will often attract the empty leg in some way, in Oprah's case Taurean types people, or 9th house things, (like an honorary degree from Harvard!)

Mata Hari

And below is the infamous Mata Hari. Her chart shows, like Ophra's, a Fixed T-Square and a Grand Trine, this one in the element of Water.

She was an exotic dancer and courtesan, convicted of spying for Germany in the first world war. The trial was over before it began, and she was executed by firing squad in France at age 41. The idea of an exotic dancer working as a lethal double agent using her powers of seduction to extract military secrets from her many lovers made Mata Hari an enduring archetype of the femme (Venus-Asc - Moon trine in water with) fatale (Mars square Jupiter and Pluto) ... I included her in the discussion to support idea that aspect patterns do not dictate a persons reality, but they fuel it in whatever direction we point.

matahari

Here are more aspect patters to look at. Don't go nuts with them, but do familiarize yourself with the names and how they tie energy together.

aspectpattern2

Check your chart for aspect patterns like the Grand Trine, T-Square, Grand Cross, Yod, Kite, etc. Explore the example charts too, if you like, or any family, friend, or celeb charts you have. If you can post the chart here, or link to it, all the better for discussion.

This is great practice in spotting aspects with your eye, a skill that will help you in chart reading as you connect with the geometry of the circle.

See you in the comments!
