What are these houses?

The derivative houses have been around for a long time. They are used extensively in horary astrology, but that’s not all. By looking at your natal chart, they can shine a spotlight on other people in your life, showing how you naturally experiences them in different situations. It can really help with deliberate creation and getting into alignment with what you really want.

Derivative houses are also a great tool for finding where joy, abundance, talents and showing where skills, stimulation, contrast and excitement can be found. So, by looking at the natal placements and signs through this lens, as well as considering transits, progressions and synastry placements, the derivative houses offer a wealth of information and insight, explain some quirky MO’s, and line us up, Astro-LOA style. To get a quick grasp, watch this 5 minute tutorial, then come back and we’ll have some fun with individual charts. (it’s all about turning the wheel!)

How to Use Derivative Houses

Now for some fun examples! Who wants to volunteer? Let me know in the comments and we’ll play with ‘turning the wheel’ so you can all practice. (I’ll be putting charts up here, but without the birth data for privacy!

Example #1 – Jacqueline – Her questions are around business, health and home.

Jacaqueline's Chart

Here is Jacque’s natal chart. Her first question is about business, so we look to the 10th house. With the South Node there, part of her really needs to ‘let go of outcomes’ which isn’t an easy vibe for Aries Rising! So we will use derivative houses to get some hints on what will support her best ever business vibe. To do so, we’ll turn the chart to put the 10th house, or MC, on the horizon, making it of first house importance.

janette_Derivative HousesWith the 10th on the first, we see right away that of the actions she listed: coaching one-on-one, group programs, writing/blogging, product creation, the first and most supportive is going to be, ‘get thee a business plan! The 2nd from the 10th (the $$ and support form business) is ruled by Capricorn with Saturn in the house! Set a goal. Set an intention. Aries rising likes to wing it, and Libra can shilly shally, but the Saturn in you wants to have a solid, grounded, well organized plan. Just doing that OPENS the doors to support, success and increased $$. (Note –  the plan itself doesn’t matter. You simply amp up your success by making one).

The Next thing would be to go with the one-on-one coaching. Can you see why I would choose this as major support? Look at her Libra (connect, talk, counsel, coach) Sun and Venus! When we turn the chart to put the 10th on the horizon, the Sun and Venus in Libra are in the 10th house of success! (the 10th from the 10th is the 7th). One on one will support her more than group work (where she has Mars/Neptune – 11th from the 10th – which is super creative, and mystical, but may lose focus in groups – or the group is about as easy to lead as a room full of cats). Making sense?

Jacqueline’s Derivative Houses
Jacqueline’s Chart with the 10th house on the horizon – we have turned the wheel until house 10 is rising.

Turning the wheel

Writing supports her when she is on the perfect-for-Jacque-path as we see the North Node in the 2nd (support) house from the 3rd (writing).

For health boost, the best suggestion is a personal trainer, running buddy, cohort or side kick. Not that when we put the 6th house on the horizon, Jupiter (for enthusiasm and gusto) is in the 8th.  (1st house is 8 from the 6th). That means sharing this journey with a buddy. Also, Saturn (stick to it discipline) is in the 6th (daily routine) from the 6th (health) so she’s going to want to, again, have a plan, and bring a friend.

As for the 4th house of the Home, roots, and ground, when that comes to the horizon, we see the Moon ruling her 2nd (support) from the 4th (home) and that means, self-love. Whatever makes her smile, feels nurturing and comforting, she wants to do more of that. This is a Cancer moon, and Cancer moon is nurtured by 1) loving and caring 2) feeling needed/useful 3) sharing emotions. I am seeing this is perfect alignment with self-care, home, health and successful one-on-one coaching practice (where she is needed, useful and sharing powerful emotions).

Thank you Jacqueline, for letting us use your chart.

What is Chart Tone?

Night Life Esqe Chart ToneImage by Juleez

Hi Everyone, here is a quick tip on finding the general, overall zodiac tone in your horoscope. It's a great technique for getting a feel for how the elements and modalities in the chart work together, and which is your dominant of each.

Chart Tone

What is it?
The overall quality of the chart as a feeling or sound: "the chart tone is fixed AIR, or Aquarius".

Synonyms
noun.    feel - note - sound - tune - emphasis

You find the tone of your chart by adding up the Elements and Modalities and finding the one sign that represents the strongest in both ie abundant AIR and abundant Fixed signs = fixed Air or Aquarius.

Follow the 5 minute tutorial to find the chart tone in any birth chart.

Learn the Four Basic Astrology Building Blocks

Hi Everyone! For those just starting out, this Video Tutorial will show you the four basic Astrology Building Blocks , the constructs of the horoscope or natal chart. This includes groundwork on the  planets, signs, houses and aspects - in under 3 minutes!

A Metaphor for the Astrology Building Blocks

Think of Astrology as a symbol system where the planets are the actors. The the signs are the their costumes they wear. The houses are the stages, the sets they act upon, and the aspects are the scripts they’ve been handed. How they are scripted to interrelate.

Remember, YOU are the director, and you call the shots, decide when to say Action and when to say cut!

Exercises for learning the basic Astrology Building Blocks

  • Learn to recognize and draw the planetary glyphs. Follow the online tutorial for help there - learn to draw the signs and learn how to draw the planetary glyphs.
  • Spot each of your planets in your chart and note which sign and house they are in. This goes into your notebook. Leave room under each entry to add more insights and data as you go along.
  • Add planetary themes and energies to your notebook, Pinterest astrology board or vision board.

Enjoy, and see you in the comments for Q & A.

Midpoint Magic

Midpoint Magic grid

Hi Everyone, it's Kim Falconer here with a tutorial on the very cool and useful midpoint magic.

midpoint
noun
noun: midpoint; plural noun: midpoints; noun: mid-point; plural noun: mid-points
  1. the exact middle point.

The Midpoint Magic

Midpoints in astrology are the half-way points between two planets, points or angles in the horoscopic wheel or chart. (Like the half-way point between your Sun and Moon, or between your Ascendant and Mars.) The emphasis here is on wheel. Don't forget we are working with a 360 degree circle. It's simply geometry. Midpoints are going to be your friends, once you learn how to find them, and integrate the symbolic meaning. You'll also learn here how to find transiting midpoints and what they might mean. Let's get started!

Midpoints are plotted by finding the midway mark between two given planets or points.  Watch this 8 minute video  midpoint tutorial for the basics. Then we'll go through the steps, one by one.

Youtube Midpoint Tutorial

Let's put the Midpoint Magic into practice.

If a person’s sun is 1 degree of Aries and their Venus is 1 degree of Leo, the Sun/Venus midpoint will fall in two opposing places: the nearer midpoint at 1 degree Gemini, and the farther midpoint directly opposite at 1 degree Sagittarius.

Because the horoscope is spherical (a wheel or circle with 360 degrees) and not a linear stack, there will always be two midpoints exactly 180 degrees apart for every combination of planets.  One will form a shorter arc and the other a longer one.  The shorter arc is generally considered stronger, though both are important.

Often it's not easy to see the midpoint at a glance and the quickest way of making an accurate list of them is to follow this simple formula:

FORMULA:  Reduce the planetary positions to their degrees of the circle, add them together and divide by two

Let me explain with an example:

To find the midpoint of natal Moon and Sun when the Moon is 15 degrees Aries 18 minutes and the Sun 27 degrees Scorpio 35 minutes, we reduced the Moon to 15.18 and the Sun to 237.35. Added together equals 252.53. Divide divided by 2 gives a far midpoint of 126.26 or 6 degrees Leo 26 minutes and a nearer midpoint of the exact opposite of 6 degrees Aquarius 26 minutes. The following list reinterprets the signs into degrees of the circle making it easy to convert the degrees of the signs into a degree of the circle, and then back again.

Aries                           0
Taurus                       30
Gemini                       60
Cancer                       90
Leo                           120
Virgo                        150
Libra                         180
Scorpio                     210
Sagittarius                 240
Capricorn                  270
Aquarius                    300
Pisces                        330

Practice finding the Midpoint magic in your chart

I'd love everyone to pull up there charts and find their Sun/Moon midpoint now, using this method. If you get stuck, give us a shout out, in the comments.

The midpoints are a blend of the two planets involved and their sign and house placement can indicate where and how that energy can best express. For example the Sun/Moon midpoint represents a merging of yin and yang, conscious and unconscious, male and female. Where this midpoint falls in the chart can represent marriage, creative genius AND practical application, friendship and love. When it is activated by transit (Uranus on Su/Mo for example) or by another person (someone's Venus on your Su/Mo) it can 'wake up' desires for balance, harmony, creative expression, nurturing and love combined. Make sense? Reinhold Ebertin has written extensively on midpoints. If you want to delve deeper, definitely start with The Combination of Stellar Influences.

The composite or ‘relationship’ horoscope is a chart derived from the midpoints between two natal charts

See my article on Astro - Compatibility for more details

It can be drawn in different ways but basically it is a chart of the midpoints between two natal horoscopes (Person A’s Sun and Person B’s Sun, Person A's Moon and Person B's Moon etc). The new planetary positions are then plotted in a third chart created from a composite (midpoint) Ascendant and Midheaven.  Although the points do not represent any specific moment in time like a natal or even progressed chart does, it symbolically reflects the nature of the relationship, an entity unto itself. So if you work with composite charts, you are already using midpoints.

Homework for Midpoint Magic

    1. Find two midpoints in your natal chart, the Sun/Moon and the Venus/Jupiter. Plot them in your chart. You will now have FOUR new points in the chart involving two PAIRS of houses. Think about that this might mean in terms of Su/Mo- relationship, self-love, love, partnership, friendship, and Ve/Ju - Joy, happiness, expansion, abundance, core values.

Note if there are any planets conjunct these midpoints. What influence would that bring.

Note if there are any transits coming up to these midpoints.

2. Finally, pick two TRANSITING planets that interest you and find their midpoints. Where do those fall in your chart. For example, Mars at 6 Saggo and Saturn at 9 Saggo make the Ma/Sa midpoint 7.5 Saggo and 7.5 Gemini. That would be an area of YOUR chart where you are driving with the brakes on.

midpoints_astr_com-am3. When you get a handle on finding midpoints by hand, you can double check your work by clicking on your chart at Astro.com, then click Extended Chart Selection. From there, click on PULLEN/ASTROLOG and Aspects/midpoint grid chart.

Let me know what you discover, or if you need help with the maths.

This is an excellent tool for your astro-toolbox so I hope you all give it a go.
