Eclipse Season Image by Catrin Welz-Stein
The 2018 Eclipse Season is upon us. Are you ready?
Eclipse Season Dates
The first eclipse of the year is January 31/February 1 – a (Full Moon) Total Lunar Eclipse @11 Leo linking Sun-Moon-Nodes to Ceres, Venus and Neptune. The last time we had a Lunar Eclipse at this degree was January 1999.
This current eclipse is significant because it is not only a total eclipse, but also a 'blue' moon (second full moon of the month in the northern hemisphere) and a supermoon* or at it's perigee. Think of this as activating and heightening emotions, perspectives and sensations while possibly shortening fuses. This may not be negative for you at all. With awareness, you can use a 'short fuse' to release tolerations, setting free pent up emotions and clearing the air. Just know you might cut a wide swath. Without awareness, there could be fallout.
In your natal chart, attention is placed on opposite polarities like yin and yang, home and career, internal and external, Self and Others. You have a chance to balance life, especially in the houses touched by this eclipse. Namely, the houses where you find 11 Leo and 11 Aquarius. If you need help finding those houses, run through the simple steps below, or give a shout out in the comments.
TIMES for the January 31st/February 1st Eclipse
LA – Wednesday – 5.26 am
NY. – Wednesday – 8.26 am
LON – Wednesday – 1.26 pm
SYD – Thursday – 12.26 am
TIMES for the February 15th/16th Eclipse
February 15/16 is the (New Moon) Partial Solar Eclipse @27 Aquarius. This is a powerhouse time to start new projects, especially in in the area of life ruled by the house activated (see how to find that below).
LA – Thursday – 1.06 pm
NY - Thursday – 4.06 pm
LON – Thursday – 9.06 pm
SYD – Friday – 8.06 am
Eclipse Season in Perspective
In ancient times, eclipses were associated with dramatic events, political, geological or existential. Hence the apprehension many feel when an eclipse is impending. Luckily, it's not the 1400s anymore, and we aren't locked into a single perspective. We decide how we will align with these Sun-moon-node cycles. Most importantly, we focus on the gifts they bring.
By checking where the eclipse falls in your chart, we can be open to the positive, creative change on offer. It's easy to do. Just follow these simple steps.
For the Jan 31sr/Feb 1st Total Lunar Eclipse @11 Leo:
- Look at your natal chart (created on Astro.com or your favorite software)
- Check where 11 Degrees of Leo and 15 degrees of Leo falls
- Focus on those HOUSES to see where you will receive your cosmic gifts
For the Partial Solar Eclipse on February 15th/16th:
- Look at your natal chart (created on Astro.com or your fav software)
- Check where 27 degress of Aquarius is in your chart
- Look at that HOUSE to open to the kick-ass fresh start on offer
Prep for the Eclipse Season Gifts
Ways to prepare for the eclipse opportunities include:
- Revisit your core values
- Make a list of tolerations to release
- Think about home live vs. career - balanced?
- Clean and de-clutter the house, or even a drawer
- Clear up misunderstandings in relationships
- Get more rest
- Boost your nutrition
- Find more time to exercise
- Appreciate what is, just as it is
- Amp up self love
Let's talk more about this in the comments.
Happy eclipse season gifts! I'd love to hear how this shapes up for you.
xxKim
* A supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that approximately coincides with the closest distance that the Moon reaches to Earth in its elliptic orbit, resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth.[1] The technical name is the perigee syzygy of the Earth–Moon–Sun system or more simply full (or new) Moon at perigee.[a] - Read More....

Hi Everyone, Ready to look at the Venus Synodic Cycles again? Checking them out explains the movement from Morning Star to Evening Star as we are about to see with the Superior Conjunction January 9, 2018. Notice it is exactly conjunct Pluto!
Listen to the call where we talk about the superior conjunction and Pluto in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th house with example charts. We also explore "magic eye" manifesting, finding current core values and how the conjunction works in a planetary return chart.
Align with the Stars Call - January 2018
Align with the Stars Call Chat with links to the example charts:
OK, the cycles can seem a little complex, but I hope you embrace the mystery and wonder. It really is spectacular.
The Venus Synodic Cycles Visual Tutorial
Don’t let the word Synodic scare you. It’s Latin for ‘hook-up’ or meet up, and here we mean the cycles in which Venus is conjunct with the Sun. There is a pattern. An amazing one. Check it out.
Watch this tutorial on the Transits of Venus for full understanding, definitions, animations and connections.
The position of Venus in this video ephemeris and astro clock is 2013-2014, but the concepts remain the same. See below for current position and upcoming Superior Conjunction January 2018 and the shift to Evening Star.
Recap of the facts:
- Every 8 years, Venus orbits the Sun 13 times while the Earth orbits the Sun eight times.
- During the 8 year cycle, Venus passes between the Sun and the Earth 5 times, completing five Synodic periods, with each one lasting approximately 584 days, or 18+ months.
- 13 Venus revolutions equals 8 earth years equals five synodic periods, or alignments of the Earth, Venus and the Sun.
- Each conjunction of Venus and the Sun creates a point in a 5 star pentagram pattern over the 8 year period. Really amazing!
Morning and Evening Star
As we see in the tutorial, Venus is the Morning Star when she rising AHEAD of the sun. She’s seen as the Evening Star when she sets AFTER the sun. For 60 days between retro and direct, she’s in the underworld (Venus - Inanna) and we can’t see her at all because she’s so close to the sun, his light obscures her own.
Venus Synodic Cycles Step by Step
Inferior Conjunction
We start the cycle with the inferior conjunction, like a New Moon phase. It happens when Venus is mid-Retro and moving very slowly ‘backwards’. She rises before the sun, and is so close we can’t see her, like a dark moon.
Morning Star
When the sun and Venus are about 10 degrees apart, (Venus rising 10 degrees AHEAD of the sun), we can see her in the pre-dawn. At this point, she is called Phosphorus or Lucifer, the “light bearer.” The Morning Star.
Twenty-one days after the inferior conjunction, Venus turns direct, called Direct Station.
Thirty-six days after the inferior conjunction, Venus is most brilliant in the morning sky.
Maximum Elongation
Another thirty-six days Venus reaches its maximum distance from the Sun or Maximum Elongation (never more than 45 degrees away). At this time, Venus is moving at the same speed or faster than the sun. Catching up!
Superior Conjunction
Two-hundred and sixteen days (6 x 36 days) later, Venus reaches the superior conjunction with the Sun, when she is moving close to her maximum of speed of about 1°15′ per day. Think of this as the ‘full moon’ stage, where Venus is farthest from the Earth. She’s back in the underworld again, not visible in the morning or evening.
Evening Star
Thirty-six days after the superior conjunction, when the Sun and Venus are about ten degrees apart, Venus reappears from the underworld as the evening sky, setting AFTER the Sun.
Retrograde Station
Finally, we have thirty-six days later, the Retrograde Station that leads back, Rx, to the new synodic cycle starting with the next inferior conjunction where we can’t see her. She’s in the underworld yet again, until she moves 10 degrees AHEAD of the sun, appearing as the Morning star.
Venus Superior Conjunction 2018
Now that you have that under your belt, check the Astro clock and see where Venus is now in her Synodic Cycle:
You’ll find she’s in the underworld, not visible in the morning any longer but not yet seen in the evening. Her superior conjunction is January 9, 2018 and then by early March, she will set 10 degrees behind the sun and be visible in the night sky.

Starting to make sense?
Fascinating Maths
584 x 5 = 365 x 8 = 2920. i.e. there are exactly 5 Venus cycles in every 8 years, and the significant points migrate slowly retrograde through the zodiac. This means that every 8 years the same Rx loop occurs at the same time of year, covering the same degrees of the zodiac. Psychologically, it represents a time of the most profound maturing of the soul through the purification of the heart. We are invited to include that which has been excluded, to make amends internally, to seek forgiveness and to process unfinished business so that we may be renewed and released.– Melanie Reinhart
Now that you have gleaned all this cool science, how do you apply it to your chart?
Applying the Venus Cycle to the Chart
First, work out which part of the Venus synodic cycles when you where born. Was she the morning star? Evening? Direct” Rx? In the underworld (invisible)? Do you connect this energy to your relationship MO? Here is a lengthy Venus Cycle PDF to work off of. And for delineations and deep details, this article by the humanistic astrologer, Michael R Myer.
Next, check the house Venus was in when the cycle began (where was the inferior conjunction before, or during, your birth?) It may have been a year or more back. Do your relationships spring from the matters of this house? Interesting, right?
Now, check your loves, partners, family and past loves charts. Are they in the same Venus synodic cycles as your chart? Different? You may notice a kind of simpatico with ppl in the same cycle as you.
Hopefully, this will get you in touch with the connection between astrology (the symbolic and energetic correlations between the planets and person/place and things on Earth), and astronomy, the the branch of science which deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole.
Extra Insights
Most of all, anyone confused about the Daily Motion of the Planets through the chart, this 2 minute tut will help.
Please let me know if you have any questions. 🙂
Again, the first Align with the Stars Call is on January 9, 2019 at 5pm Eastern. We will look at the superior conjunction of Venus transiting in your chart. Details for the new online venue to follow.

Hi All,
Here is the PDF Chat for the call. You'll find links to the charts we talked about and some really great gems for Saturn into Cappy.
You can access the call on Talkshoe. Or, listen to it and/or download from here:
Of course, we'll be talking about how and WHEN to set new intentions for 2018 as well so please join us, or listen to the recording. At this point, it's set for Talkshoe but as some of you know, there have been interesting time warps happening over at the old TS. If you are trying to access calls and courses posted there but run into a 404 message, please email us and we'll do our best to help. Talkshoe assures us they are working around the clock to restore any lost calls. Thank you, Talkshoe!
Topics for the last call for 2017
We'll look at Mercury Rx in action and see what's happening for you in your Sagittarius house. Reflecting? Slowing down? Releasing tolerations? Jeannette and I have techniques for you to align with this powerful re-calibration device we call Mercury Rx.
On the Day, Saturn goes into Capricorn for the first time in 29 years. It's one of his HOME signs, (the other being Aquarius) so think of strength, integrity, structure and ambition in your Cappy house or houses. We have 2.5 years to leverage this energy, so let's do it right (ie Saturn style).
We've had a few members request a review of scripting and the power of the story we tell. Jeannette's going to give us an example of how we actually can CHANGE another person (or at least, how they are around us).
Will we talk about wishes for 2018 and setting strong intentions. You bet, but not on December 31 or January 1. Looking at the retrograde and eclipse patterns of 2018 will help us all align with the most powerful manifesting momentum.
Bring your charts and see you there!

King of Wands by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law
Hi everyone, this post is for our call on Mars and Empowerment. The call is here:
Links are here, on the Call Chat PDF.
Let's start with a quick quiz
Rate on a Scale of 1 – 5
I take care of myself, physically, emotionally, financially
I’m my own boss at home
I’m my own boss at work
I say it like it is
I don’t give a rip what others think
I do whatever I like, when I like, how I like.
***
I’m in a partnership
I share the decision-making processes at home
I collaborate at work
I speak diplomatically
I say what I feel other people want to hear/ or are capable of hearing
You can probably tell which two planets we are testing for here - Venus and Mars, right? To explore empowerment, we really need to look at Mars in all his forms.
Mars is raw, animated energy. It represents the force that gets us out of bed in the morning, staking claims, winning battles and achieving whatever it is we want. Vital in our ability to move through each day, natal and transiting placement of this planet can be used as a physical energy gauge, suggesting just how much dynamic force we need to wield and where. Mars is healthy aggression, keeping us out of victim mode, but Mars also links to accidents, burns, cuts, and violent outbursts, selfish, impulsive and rash behavior.
Most of the challenging expressions (for our culture) of Mars result from frustrated energy, when we can’t get our way, be assertive or initiate desires. Mars wants take action, find an outlet and often the form of expression needs to be physical. With links to the flight/fight response, Mars equate directly with increased adrenal activity. Once activated, the only way to burn the stress off is (usually) physical.
Is Mars a tool for alignment?
Jeannette talked recently about the Beauty of Anger - "The fact is I’m still getting some juice from anger right now in this red hot moment, and I’m hanging out here as long as it feels good and certainly long enough to fuel incentive for positive change. If it didn’t bother me this much, I might not notice it and I might not change it. (“It” being my relationship.) So this anger is a good thing. It’s got my attention!"
Abraham states that anger (Mars) is only a problem when resisted. Check out the emotional scale. How many of these feelings are linked to Mars?
The Emotional Guidance Scale
1. | Joy/Appreciation/Empowered/Freedom/Love |
2. | Passion |
3. | Enthusiasm/Eagerness/Happiness |
4. | Positive Expectation/Belief |
5. | Optimism |
6. | Hopefulness |
7. | Contentment |
8. | Boredom |
9. | Pessimism |
10. | Frustration/Irritation/Impatience |
11. | Overwhelment |
12. | Disappointment |
13. | Doubt |
14. | Worry |
15. | Blame |
16. | Discouragement |
17. | Anger |
18. | Revenge |
19. | Hatred/Rage |
20. | Jealousy |
21. | Insecurity/Guilt/Unworthiness |
22. | Fear/Grief/Depression/Despair/Powerlessness |
Bashar treats Mars (anger) as an alignment tool, saying that it shows we have new awareness. Putting that awareness on how we are feelings -frustrated, restless, aggressive- is a chance to become happier (like knowing what we are tolerating and finding ways to release resistance to it).
The Rabbi Hillel said: If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?”
The balance of Mars and Venus
You can see from the quiz at the top we're looking at a balance between Venus/Libra (love) and Mars/Aries (will).
These two signs/planets are a natural polarity, two ends of the same stick. They illustrate the battle between will and willingness, give and take, self and other. Mars and Aries orient towards self-awareness where Venus and Libra orient towards awareness of the valued significant other. When Mars wants to dominate and win control, Venus wants to share, give and receive. How to find balance so we experience both in the world we manifest?
Check where Mars and Venus are in the natal chart, and by transit, and then, tell a new story. What you are saying about your Mars and Venus, your love and will expression is creating your experience of it. If you don't like it, try saying something new.
Address tolerations. The basic steps are:
- Delete it (decide it doesn’t have to be done after all)
- Delegate it (put someone else in charge of it)
- Do it (just get it over with, once and for all)
- Dance with it (transform how you experience it)
Read more deeply here on Jeannette's Blog.
Mars, Stress and the Four Elements
Some people have a high threshold for stress and anger than others. To demonstrate, consider how the four elements might react to aggression
Fire signs can thrive on excitement, risk and danger. They don’t often mind being kept on the edge. This element has a high tolerance for stress and may not respond negatively to loads that would cripple others. An accent on fire signs in the natal chart makes challenge and conflict a welcome stimulation.
Earth signs tend to abhor the stress of change, especially when sudden and unexpected. There is a desire to experience life through the senses, meeting events in steady, predictable and enduring ways. An emphasis of earth in the natal chart makes project planning, productivity and tangible results a must.
Air signs tend to handle moderate levels of stress and the pressure of deadlines. The more there is to do, the more they get done. An accent on air in the natal chart may welcome high-tension, social environments that require quick and varied intellectual responses.
Water signs take on the nuance and character of their environment, having semi-permeable boundaries. Their personal stress levels can reflect the energy of those around them. An emphasis of water in the natal chart often indicates someone who can cope with emotional turbulence and the inner needs and demands of others.
Thoughts?
See you in the comments to explore your Mars empowerment and manifesting.
Compatible Astrology
November 18, 2017Youtube,Synastry,GVA Calls,Courses,Manifesting
Image - 7 of cups by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law
Hi Everyone, do you have compatible astrology with another person? Want to know how to find out?
I wrote an article on synastry astrology for Dell Horoscope Magazine, Vol. 70N0. 2 February 2004. Thirteen years later, I thought it would be fun to update and offer to you all. CLICK for the original online version.
What is compatible Astrology?
Something is compatible when it is capable of living or performing in harmonious, agreeable or congenial combination with another. -American Heritage Dictionary 1975
Being in a harmonious relationship can be fun, and rewarding. Positive vibes experienced through compatibility, like affection, humor, sensuality, trust and genuine interest in each other, enhance health and improve longevity, bolstering self-esteem and well-being. All good stuff.
Of course, not all relationships are destined to be compatible, nor do they need to be.
As 'Like attracts Like' would have it, they may be ‘learning experiences’, recreations of childhood patterns, compensation for suppressed issues, erotic adventures, or just wild card flirts. Compatibility in relationship isn’t always the objective. Keep that in mind as you learn to read the synastry charts between yourself and another.
The point is, the question of compatibility often arises later, after the initial whirlwind attraction has passed. As the couple faces each other, their eyes may rest on someone foreign and unfamiliar. How can we find out sooner if a relationship is potentially harmonious? Enter the synastry chart!
What is Synastry?
Synastry (syn-together/astry-stars) is the study of stars in the same place. It takes the planets of one person’s chart and compares them to another.
Think of the other person as a set of permanent transits. What will their impact be? Sound simple? Actually, it gets quite complex. With an array of tools—synastry comparisons, transits, directions and progressions, mid-point charts such as composites, progressed composites, and Davison chart analysis—the art of compatibility prediction can be daunting. So, how to make a start?
Seven Simple Steps to Synastry
After studying the natal charts separately to assess the individual approach to relationship, ie, their moon, Venus, 7th house, 7th house ruler, aspects to all and Asc-Desc dynamic, to start with - jump into these steps:
Step 1. How does the couple nurture each other emotionally? Compatibility increases with a parallel level of emotional maturity and nurturing style. If these are not in synch, it may be difficult for the couple to give and receive harmoniously. We look to the Moons to show how the couple’s emotional worlds engage.
Step 2. Do the career goals and creative energy levels harmonize? All the compatibility in the world can come crashing down if the couple is unable to develop parallel goals with commensurate enthusiasm. This is often reflected in the synastry Suns.
Step 3. Are the communication and educational backgrounds compatible? How do they talk to each other? Mercury rules all things to do with mental rapport and learning.
Step 4. What is the couple’s approach to finances, spending and saving? Do they value the same kinds of food, music, movies, art and sensual pleasures? Venus gives us a major clue to these very important issues in relationship.
Step 5. Do they have matching levels of self-esteem, self-authority, individuation and sexual energy? Mars by synastry can tell us about the balance of power.
Step 6. Are their family backgrounds and inherited beliefs similar? What gives them a sense of meaning and purpose in life? Jupiter by synastry tells us if the couple likes exploring similar horizons.
Step 7. What is the nature of the physical attraction? A healthy intimate relationship usually includes fulfilling sex and a desire for each other physically. Surprisingly, Saturn can give clues here, highlighting the shadow issues of attraction, projection and repulsion that can pop up. Complex yet vital, this is the area most subject to change throughout the duration of the relationship. Looking to Chiron, as well as the Ascendants, Mars, Venus and certain asteroids and points (Eros, Psyche, Lunar Nodes, Vertex and others), add vital information as well.
Assessing Compatible Astrology
In a complete compatibility assessment, other intra-planetary aspects are considered, as well as the houses activated, current transits and progression. This post centers on same planet synasty (Moon-Moon, Sun-Sun), focusing on sign emphasis primarily. It's a place to begin.
You might want to review the divisions of the Signs - polarity, element and modality, orientation, decan and dwad. This will help you understand how the signs relate to each other uniquely, reflecting different levels of compatibility. Just because two planets are not a ‘harmonious aspect’ doesn’t mean the couple will not have a meaningful connection. Some amount of tension adds spark and intrigue.
Astrologer/author Stephen Arroyo says, “Everyone has to feed themselves at the air, fire, earth and water levels.” A predominance of fire needs activity and exhilaration. Earth wants to ground energy in practical ways. Air needs a diet of mental stimulation and water longs for a pool of feelings to immerse in.
Angles and Midpoints in Compatible Astrology
Ascendant: Awakens, inspires, acknowledges socially. It can feel heavenly to have personal planets contact here!
Vertex: Sudden turn of affairs, epiphany, instant attraction, immediate sense that something WILL happen together.
Lunar Nodes Familiar: They can bring fascination, feeling of kinship or destiny, comfortable vs challenging as time progresses.
Fortuna: Sense of joy, ease and creative pleasure. Life gets a little brighter when someone’s personal planet falls here.
Sun/Moon MP: Activates a sense of inner balance, awakens wholeness and feelings of completion. Longing for union.
Venus/Mars MP: Stimulate sexual energy in playful, mischievous ways. Creative, artistic, active, outgoing. No hiding this one.
Eros/Psyche MP: Awakens desire to merge, sexual energy is intense, deep and emotive. Transformation whether taboo or not. Check the table below for more asteroids to consider.

In the words of Lord Ismay , “It is probably the most ideal marriage there has ever been”.
Does the synastry agree?
Winston Churchill would have been a taxing man to live with. His tremendous focus on world affairs left him little time to nurture the emotive needs of a marriage and his bombastic nature was given to unpredictable and tempestuous display. He drank. He smoked. He had a pressured life of which his marriage was only one aspect. Yet his compatibility with Clementine is undeniable.
For Clementine, the marriage was her vocation. Intelligent and well educated, she supported and influenced her husband throughout his long public career, putting the relationship above her personal goals, ambition and children. Even brief escapades, on both sides, did not spoil the union.
Winston’s dominate FIRE emphasis suggests courageous, verbose and innovative energy. His Moon in Leo conjunct the fixed star Regulus adds a noble bearing with a drive for fulfillment in the limelight. Although Mars is in its detriment, the first house placement adds fuel to the fire as does the conjunction with Jupiter. The Virgo Ascendant brings discernment; the chart ruler in Scorpio suggested shrewdness.
Friends said his marriage to Clementine wouldn’t last six months. Winston just wasn’t the marrying kind. Contrarily, it lasted 56 years, filling boxes and drawers with intimate love letters, notes and messages that passed unceasing between.
Without an accurate birth time for Clementine, her chart has been drawn flat with zero degrees of Aries on the Ascendant. Clementine also had a dominant FIRE nature with Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars all in Aries. That is a lot of gusto, especially for a woman born in the 1800’s. A natural way to live out such energy is though a powerful man and she found herself one of the most potent in the world!
Follow the Seven Steps
Step 1. How does the couple nurture each other emotionally? Winston’s Moon is found at 29 degrees of Leo is in the Aries decan and the Cancer Dwad. This adds might, courage and individualism to the dignified and gregarious Leo Moon, along with a dose of sympathy and kindness. He would need energy, camaraderie and a sense of being special to feel nurtured. Clementine’s Moon, in late Libra or early Scorpio, is a social orientation, commensurate with Winston’s. She would need relationship to feel nurtured and emotionally connected. It is likely that the Moons are sextile, creating a channel to awaken both the inner world and the desire to nurture each other.
Step 2. Do the career goals and creative energy levels harmonize? The Sun signs trine by element indicate a commensurate high energy level and mutual need to feed each other with doses of enthusiasm, audacity and exploration. With his Sun in the first decan of Sagittarius, there is the added Jupiter influence of talk, trek and talk some more. The Aquarius Dwad brings a larger social perspective and tenacity. Clementine’s Sun is in the second Decan of Aries and Leo Dwad, adding solar staying power to the sometimes erratic flights of the Ram. The couple matched in vitality and vision.
Step 3. Is the level of education and approach to communication compatible? Both were well educated people, though Clementine did better academically than Winston. A passionate writer and speaker, his words moved the masses! The second decan of Scorpio adds Neptune’s sensitivity to the collective where the fixed Taurus Dwad made him a formative man to argue with.
Clementine’s 3rd decan of Aries Mercury has Jupiter’s philosophic bend, and the Pisces Dwad links to the collective as well. With both Mercury’s ruled by Mars, neither bulked at an intellectual debate! Their Mercury’s aspect by the minor 160 degree quadrinovile, (a division of 9 associated with what is produced in the long run, and possibly an indication of sexual attraction and marriage . Winston and Clementine’s letters testify to a copious flow of thoughts between them.
Step 4. What is the couple’s approach to finances? Both Clementine’s and Winston’s Venus fall in Fire signs and are linked by the lesser used biseptile aspect,102:51 degrees associated with poetic, creative and inspirational qualities. Clementine came from an upper-class home afflicted with poverty where as Winston’s was one of flamboyance and splendor. After 11 years of marriage she wrote to him, "You took me from the straitened little by-path I was treading and took me with you into the life and colour and jostle of the high-way....” That ‘life and color and jostle’ would be well appreciated by a Venus in either Sagittarius or Aries!
Step 5. What is the balance of power in the relationship? Clementine has the more powerful Mars by sign and she influenced Winston throughout the decades of their union. An article in the Washington Times state, “For decades his wife fought at his side, entertained at his table, offered her judgment to him and his colleagues and his enemies. She took his place in his absence, and sometimes in his presence. She became an international figure. She had power, and she used it. Always she had a mind of her own.” In an era where male and female roles where dictated by tradition, Clementine wielded her Aries Mars (Aries Decan and Dwad!) from behind the scenes. Winston wielded his first house Mars conjunct Jupiter in front of the entire world.
Step 6. Are their family backgrounds and inherited beliefs similar? Both Winston and Clementine came from upper-class family backgrounds and moved in high society. Their social circles linked, as their sextile Jupiter’s suggest. Her Jupiter in Leo indicates dignity and a drive for social power.
The Aries decan adds (more) strength and courage and the Gemini Dwad suggest wit, charm and urge to communicate. Winston’s Jupiter in Libra shows culture and idealism. The Gemini decan adds versatility and, again, the urge to communicate. The Cancer Dwad brings intuitive sensitivity and gut instinct to an intellectual approach. They both loved to travel, explore and adventure, together and independently.
Step 7: What is the nature of the physical attraction? The Saturn’s here are trine, a contact generally better favored than the harsher aspects . Still they would have awakened each other’s more vulnerable side, making it difficult to discuss intimate fears and insecurities. (Clementine would sometime write to Winston in French, saying it was easier to be passionate that way). Clementine’s Venus/1221Amor conjunct Winston’s Vertex/Descendant/1221Amor may have felt to him like an epiphany, a turning point of great import. Her Uranus conjunct his Ascendant served to jolt the man who was not the marrying kind.
The complexities of his Venus and Psyche/Eros midpoint opposite her Saturn and his Sun opposite her Chiron could account for her initial “cold feet”. Clearly, her Sappho conjunct his Venus and her Venus/Mars and VE/MA midpoint on his Descendent, tantalized the couple throughout their long relationship. Winston’s Juno conjunct her Psyche/Eros midpoint stimulated sustaining love. In Winston’s words, he married in 1908 and lived happily ever after .
The Lunar Node axis in both charts are activated by the synastry with Clementine’s Mercury conjunct his N. Node and Winston’s Ascendant conjunct her N. Node. Both are opposite by sign suggesting complementary support in their ability to make strides forwards as well as nurture each other in times of retreat.
Did the attraction last? In 1962, after 54 years of marriage, Winston writes, “…I have found it quite lonely (with you absent) & will rejoice to see us joined together (tomorrow) in gaiety and love. I place myself at your disposal…” That would be a YES.

Adonis 06 Sc 30 xxxxddxo08 Sc 31
This brief example contrasts the Churchill relationship. Ruth is a feisty woman with a straight-forward audacity and brash style. She can be at once pragmatic and mystical, blunt and humorous. Always, she is possessive and suspicious in her relationships, especially with Harold.
Harold is a genius, given to mood swings, absent mindedness, intuitive insights and occasional mumbling. Appearing boyishly whimsical, he doesn’t miss a thing. Unpredictable and self-absorbed, yet sensitive and brilliant, he also has a possessive streak when it comes to his marriage. What do the seven simple steps reveal?
Step 1. How does the couple nurture each other emotionally? Ruth’s Moon in Sagittarius pulls no punches. She has an intuition that won’t quit and an instant response to everything she perceives. Her emotional needs are dramatic. Harold’s Moon is in the same polarity and collective orientation, yet the Aquarian decan and Dwad gives him a cool detachment. He needs isolation to produce original thought; she needs freedom and adventure. He saturates himself in work to escape her critique; she travels overseas to escape him.
Step 2. Do the career goals and creative energy levels harmonize? The Suns are quincunx, the150 degree aspect noted for strain and challenge. Ruth’s goals are ambitions and fiscal. Harold, though not opposed to increasing the comfort zone, has more creative endeavors in mind. As his business manager, Ruth pushes and goads him to fit her designs. He resists in ways that undermine all her grand plans. Ruth’s Sun in Capricorn is concrete, striving, and relentless. Harold’s Sun in Leo seeks an individual glory for his accomplishments, focusing on distinct and exceptional originality. The disparity grates on each other, and all those within shouting distance.
Step 3. Is the level of education and approach to communication compatible? Both gifted thinkers, Harold has had more years of education though what Ruth lacks in academia, she makes up for in wit. Her Mercury is part of a stellium in Sagittarius, expanding the mind and bringing into scope the larger picture. Harold’s Mercury in Virgo is precise, analytical and focused on fine details. His thoughts tend to be logical, though sometimes they are swayed by Neptune’s perchance for fantasy. He weaves little deceptions to escape her wrath; she catches him in the act, every time. Their Mercury’s form no aspect with each other.
Step 4. What is the couple’s approach to money? Harold is frugal when it comes to finances. He counts every penny and questions every expense. Venus in Cancer can be an astute accountant. Ruth, by contrast, is secretive about the finances. She hides transaction she feels he would veto. Although the Venus’s are trine by sign, they form the 135 degree sesquiquadrate aspect, known for instability and disruption.
Step 5. What is the balance of power and sexual energy of the relationship? The Mars aspect forms another stressful sesquiquadrate. Ruth has the upper hand with mars at home in fire, conjunct the expansive Jupiter (Aries decan and Cancer Dwad). The cardinal nature along with the brusque Sagittarius creates a force to be reckoned with. Harold’s Mars is in detriment in Taurus, (Taurus decan/Cancer Dwad). He is constantly attempting to placate Ruth’s theatrical tantrums, though he can throw ones of his own. Apparently the sex, when they can stand each other, is fantastic. (Note her Pan on his Asc.)
Step 6. Are their family backgrounds and inherited beliefs similar? Yes! Here we find, at last, a wide sextile between Ruth’s strong Jupiter in Sagittarius and Harold’s in Libra. They have both left their inherited Judeo-Christian backgrounds to find a shared belief in Buddhism. When they find time to chant together, much discord is lifted, momentarily.
Step 7. What is the nature of the physical attraction? A mix of attraction and repulsion is undeniable between these two. Here the Saturn’s are only in aspect by parallel declination, not by sign or degree. That they trigger each other’s shadow issues is undeniable. A fated feeling comes with Harold’s Moon conjunct Ruth’s Ascendant and Psyche/Eros midpoint and his Sun/Uranus on her Descendent. Her Sun also activates his Psy/Eros midpoint! His Saturn is on her anti-vertex, her Sun/Moon midpoint is on his anti-vertex, all potent, dynamic sparks. That his Anteros (love returned or avenged) is opposite her Venus in fixed signs is significant, as is the conjunction of their asteroids Adonis (sexual magnetism). They certainly have chemistry; they also have little functional compatibility. This demonstrates a couple together for reasons other than compatibility!
