Welcome the Chinese New Year of the Pig 2019.

LA - Feb 4 - 1:04 pm
NY - Feb 4 - 4:04 pm
LON - Feb 4 - 9:04 pm
SYD - Feb 5 - 8:04 am

In Chinese Astrology, the new year falls on the second New Moon after the solstice. Depending on where you are in the world, this year it's February 4th/5th. And yes, it coincides with the Aquarius New Moon which becomes an event chart for the next twelve months. We'll look more at that chart below, but first, a little intro to the sign of the Pig.

Eclipse Activation Alert

As a side note, the new moon prior to this one is an eclipse on January 5th at 15 Capricorn. Because of the timing of eclipses, the 'message' can be delivered one month before, or one month after, so be aware. For you, this Aquarius New Moon might pack the power of the last eclipse!

The Sign of the Pig 2019

With Chinese Astrology, the Pig is associated with the Earthly Branch (地支—dì zhī) hài (亥), and the hours 9–11 in the night. In terms of yin and yang (阴阳—yīn yáng), the Pig is yin. And, in Chinese culture, pigs symbolize wealth, abundance, easygoing approach and a generous perspective.  Pigs are the 'actions speak louder than words' sign and DO what they say, completing projects and tasks. They are practical, loyal, Earthy (like Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn) and not afraid of 'hands-on'. Sensual and appreciative of the five senses, they know how to treat themselves well, fueling creativity with practical things like good food, good company, exercise and the fresh outdoors.

Leaning toward accomplishment, they are able to handle power, stepping up as leaders though they can take care of mundane responsibilities as well. Their chubby faces and big ears are signs of fortune though they can be Zen about their life circumstances, taking responsibility for their own well-being. You don't often see them pointing a finger!

Serene, optimistic and fun, you can be the year of the Pig 2019 is something to celebrate.

Sign by Sign Horoscopes for Year of the Pig 2019

Each sign of the Western Zodiac will have a different response in the New Year of the Pig 2019, according to where this Aquarius New moon falls. Also notice that because the signs run in twelve-year cycles, they match up, more or less, with the cycle of Jupiter. For example, many Pigs born any time this century will have Jupiter in Sagittarius, which certainly goes with the buoyant, energetic, happy-go-lucky vibe of the Pig.

Let's look at how each sign can align with the energy of the Pig 2019.

AriesARIES

The Ram can have a very social time in the year of the Pig 2019. Spirits are lifted when in a group situation, with friends or the home tribe. Aries will want to lead though, so find ways to put yourself in the spotlight. It's no time to be shy. This is a great year to release resistance to adventure. You will want to travel. Watch for contrasts and prickles in relationships. Instead of falling into a default response with potential discord to follow, ask yourself what you really want in terms of partnership and do whatever it takes to create that. This is the year where you own responsibility for your own well-being.

TaurusTAURUS

The sign of the bull shares characteristics with the Chinese Pig, especially the earthy nature and easy-going vibe. Taureans will find this year more productive, creative and sensual than usual. It's good for proposing new projects, launching a career or changing to a new profession or calling. Whatever your mission in life, you'll be able to go for it with fresh enthusiasm. Great for your public identity. The only proviso is honesty. You'll need to be scrupulous in all your dealings, with a fully transparent attitude. Avoid any collaborations that have even a wiff of 'under the table' dealings. They won't stay hidden for long. If you're looking for a new partner, this is your year! Go for it.

GeminiGEMINI

The Twins in the year of the Pig will feel lucky, strong and resilient. The focus is on expansion of some kind, higher education, travel, philosophies or artistic pursuits that take you places you've never been before. To spice it up, it looks like you won't be going on these new horizon journeys alone. Whether a biz partner, artistic collaboration or romance, you won't have any trouble finding a plus one, if that's what you want. Though the year of the Pig 2019 is practical in some way, you will want to maintain a sense of the carefree. If it doesn't make you feel lighter than air, it's not for you. Your only caution is overindulgence. Avoid it for the best health outcomes.

CancerCANCER

Crabs come out of their shells in the year of the Pig. This is a time to embrace your strengths, both emotional and physical. You may want to work out, train in a mind-body-spirit discipline, martial art, weights, yoga, swimming, running, tennis. You decide, but the benefits of being in your best shape ever are multiple. You'll own your power and leadership qualities, stand up for your choices in the face of challenge, and find more authentic relationships - because you're being more authentic yourself. As always, food, comfort, artistry and nutrition are all-important, but this year a hobby or pastime could turn into a new, and lucrative, income stream.

LeoLEO

Whatever creative projects you are planning for 2019, the Pig energy is going to be supportive on all levels. From finding an agent, collaborator, biz partner, financial backer, loan officer or funding agency, to reaching the audience you are after, the clients, the job offers, this year rocks. The only concern, at this time, is forgetting about your day to day practical needs. That includes body care like skipping meals, working all hours and generally not listening to internal signals. You can't live so wild and extreme that you ignore the little things that support well-being. This goes for romance as well. Don't expect relationships to run on autopilot this year.

Virgo VIRGO

Because you are an Earth sign, the year of the Pig 2019 is a strong one for you. Expect income and finances to improve, mainly because you are able to catch problems before they happen and make necessary adjustments. Children may play a larger part in your life, more than you expected, but that goes for other creative projects too. Romance is in the air, and the more you can maintain the feeling of 'delightful uncertainty' the better. This is not a time to nail things down with commitments and contracts. Find the joy in the lightness of being and abundance will follow. It's about trusting your choices, and your heart.

LibraLIBRA

Communication is going to surprise you this year. It's like suddenly everyone guy and their dog is listening to what you have to say. Hanging on your words, even. Whether you are a speaker, teacher, blogger, writer, coach, counselor, professor or performer, the year of the Pig 2019 brings new ideas, a fresh voice and supporters who are willing to notice what you have to say. Great for publishing, traditional or electronic, this is the year you reach a wider audience with whatever it is you do. Maybe there is one special someone you would like more attention from? In the words of Jane Austin, “Let us never underestimate the power of a well-written letter.”

ScorpioSCORPIO

For Scorpio, the year of the Pig brings practical inclinations, beginning with the home. The drive might be to buy a new place, relocate or build/repair/remodel. In a way, this is a metaphor for work that you do on yourself this year. The focus is internal and you will need a sense of your own sanctuary, no matter what your living situation. Likewise, you'll need some emotional space where you can process the changes going on inside you. Partnership and live-in companions require sensitive handling, mainly because you'll be feeling a little restless or edgy. For the best results, communicate. Tell them what is happening. It's not a year to keep people guessing.

SagittariusSAGITTARIUS

Likely, you'll find this a year where you want to expand intellectually, taking new courses, leveling up credentials or going for training/edu in a whole new area of life. It's exhilarating, this launch into something new-for-you but there are a few cautions to keep in mind. Don't forget your family or tribe in the midst of it all. A sibling or cousin especially could need help and if you're too self-focused, you'll miss the cues. Optimism is sky high, and that's awesome, but check in, from time to time, to your accessibility. This is a busy year and it might be easy to get caught up in outcome more than the journey. You want to make each day a delight.

CapricornCAPRICORN

The year of the Pig 2019 is one to love what you do or change it. No exceptions. The earthy sign of the Sea-goat is similar in some ways to the Pig but one thing Pig can teach you is to love life. Every moment of it. It's not enough to make the money, meet the deadlines, fulfill the obligations. The question you must ask is, "Where is my highest joy?" If the answer isn't in what you are already doing, how you are 'being' then be ready for major changes in that department. In case you aren't sure how to evaluate this mindset, turn to your core values. What are they and are you living them to the fullness of your heart's desire?

AquariusAQUARIUS

This is the most important new moon of the year and as it ushers in the year of the Pig, there are some things for you to face. Quite possibly, you are already on the path, feeling confident, abundant, appreciative and optimistic. If so, carry on. But if not, you'll need to have a long, slow, honest look at yourself and the life you lead. Fortunately, Pig energy has a wide and generous perspective, with all the support in the world for helping you make improvements in your life if you need to. Friends, in particular, are ready to lend a hand, so reach out, ask for help and amp up your receiving skills so you can fully benefit when the good times roll.

piscesPISCES

If ever there was a year for you to work your magic, this is it. Pisces dreams the 'impossible 'dreams and Pig will gladly help you bring them to fruition. In the past, it may have been enough to have the idea, the sketch, the scene, the outline, the riff, the concept, but not now. This is your year of bringing it down to earth, manifesting your big dreams now. Shed any reluctance like an old skin and embrace the renewal and strength of vision that settles over this year. Large or small, whatever it is you hold in your thoughts is fair game for reality. Think of yourself as Midas with the golden touch, sans nasty consequences. Go forth and make it so!

Hi Everyone, Ready to look at the Venus Synodic Cycles again? Checking them out explains the movement from Morning Star to Evening Star as we are about to go into the maximum elongation and retrograde cycle in 2020. (see dates and degrees below)

Listen to the 2018 call where we talked about the superior conjunction and Pluto in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th house with example charts. We also explore "magic eye" manifesting, finding current core values and how the conjunction works in a planetary return chart.

OK, the cycles can seem a little complex, but I hope you embrace the mystery and wonder. It really is spectacular.

The Venus Synodic Cycles Visual Tutorial

Don’t let the word Synodic scare you. It’s Latin for ‘hook-up’ or meet up, and here we mean the cycles in which Venus is conjunct with the Sun. There is a pattern. An amazing one. Check it out.

Transits of Venus Tutorial and Tips

Watch this tutorial on the Transits of Venus for full understanding, definitions, animations and connections.

The position of Venus in this video ephemeris and astro clock is for 2013-2014, but the concepts remain the same. See below for current position and upcoming Retrograde cycle of 2020.

Recap of the facts:

  1. Every 8 years, Venus orbits the Sun 13 times while the Earth orbits the Sun eight times.
  2. During the 8 year cycle, Venus passes between the Sun and the Earth 5 times, completing five Synodic periods, with each one lasting approximately 584 days, or 18+ months.
  3. 13 Venus revolutions equals 8 earth years equals five synodic periods, or alignments of the Earth, Venus and the Sun.
  4. Each conjunction of Venus and the Sun creates a point in a 5 star pentagram pattern over the 8 year period. Really amazing!

Morning and Evening Star

As we see in the tutorial, Venus is the Morning Star when she rising AHEAD of the sun. She’s seen as the Evening Star when she sets AFTER the sun. For 60 days between retro and direct, she’s in the underworld (Venus - Inanna) and we can’t see her at all because she’s so close to the sun, his light obscures her own.

Venus Synodic Cycles Step by Step

Inferior Conjunction - October 2018

We start the cycle with the inferior conjunction, like a New Moon phase. It happens when Venus is mid-Retro and moving very slowly ‘backwards’. She rises before the sun, and is so close we can’t see her, like a dark moon.

Morning Star

When the sun and Venus are about 10 degrees apart, (Venus rising 10 degrees AHEAD of the sun), we can see her in the pre-dawn. At this point, she is called Phosphorus or Lucifer, the  “light bearer.” The Morning Star.

Twenty-one days after the inferior conjunction, Venus turns direct, called Direct Station - November 2018.

Thirty-six days after the inferior conjunction, Venus is most brilliant in the morning sky.

Maximum Elongation W - January 2019

When Venus is visible before sunrise, she is near her greatest western elongation. Another thirty-six days Venus reaches the maximum distance from the Sun, Note, this is never more than 47° away. At this time, Venus is moving at the same speed or faster than the sun. Catching up!

Superior Conjunction - August 2019

Two-hundred and sixteen days (6 x 36 days) later, Venus reaches the superior conjunction with the Sun, when she is moving close to her maximum of speed of about 1°15′ per day. Think of this as the ‘full moon’ stage, where Venus is farthest from the Earth. She’s back in the underworld again, not visible in the morning or evening.

Evening Star

Thirty-six days after the superior conjunction, when the Sun and Venus are about ten degrees apart, Venus reappears from the underworld as the evening sky, setting AFTER the Sun.

Maximum Elongation E - March 2020

When Venus is visible after sunset,  she is near her greatest eastern elongation. At this point, we say Venus has reached her maximum distance from the Sun. Remember, this will never be more  than 47°  away from the Sun. In the chart, we note that Venus is not more than two signs 'behind' the sun. At this time, Venus starts to slow down.

Retrograde Station - May 2020

Finally, we have the Retrograde Station that leads back, Rx, to the new synodic cycle starting with the next inferior conjunction (June 2020) where we can’t see her. She’s in the underworld yet again, until she moves 10 degrees AHEAD of the sun, appearing as the Morning star.

Venus Cycle 2018 - 2021

Now that you have that under your belt, check and see where Venus is now in her Synodic Cycle.

Venus Cycles
From the Venus Phase Cycles

Fascinating Mathematics

584 x 5 = 365 x 8 = 2920. i.e. there are exactly 5 Venus cycles in every 8 years, and the significant points migrate slowly retrograde through the zodiac. This means that every 8 years the same Rx loop occurs at the same time of year, covering the same degrees of the zodiac. Psychologically, it represents a time of the most profound maturing of the soul through the purification of the heart. We are invited to include that which has been excluded, to make amends internally, to seek forgiveness and to process unfinished business so that we may be renewed and released.Melanie Reinhart

Now that you have gleaned all this cool science, how do you apply it to your chart?

Applying the Venus Cycle to the Chart

First, work out which part of the Venus synodic cycles when you where born.

Was she the morning star? Evening? Direct” Rx? In the underworld (invisible)? Do you connect this energy to your relationship MO? Here is a lengthy Venus Cycle PDF to work off of. And for delineations and deep details, this article by the humanistic astrologer, Michael R Myer.

Next, check the house Venus was in when the cycle began

Where was the inferior conjunction, before or at the time of, your birth? It may have been a year or more back. Do your relationships spring from the matters of this house? Interesting, right?

Finally, check your past and present romantic interests' and family's charts

Are they in the same Venus synodic cycles as your chart? Different? You may notice a kind of simpatico with people in the same cycle as you.

Hopefully, this will get you in touch with the connection between astrology (the symbolic correlations between the planets and person/place and things on Earth), and astronomy, the the branch of science which deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole.

Solar Chart Solutions

Solar Charts

Hi Everyone, let's look at the Solar Chart technique, one I think you will find very useful.

A Brief History of Solar Chart Astrology

Solar Chart, AKA Solar Houses, Sun Sign Houses or even Sun Sign Astrology. It’s used in both eastern and western schools, with tropical, sidereal or Draconic zodiacs. Solar Charts were developed by ancient astrologers, went underground, then resurfaced in the 1930s when horoscope columns started appearing in newspapers and magazines.

You can use Solar Charts  as a handy way to create a birth horoscope when there is an unknown birth time, or, as a predictive tool. It's also a cool way to look at daily transits. You definitely want to get a handle on this if you’re going to write sun sign columns!

Solar Charts are simple, easy and effective. Here’s what you need to know.

Creating the Solar Chart

Solar charts are created by putting the natal sun sign on the Ascendant and using whole houses from there.

For example, if you are a Leo with Scorp rising in the Placidus house system, in the solar house system you would place zero degrees of Leo (the Sun sign) on the Ascendant. Zero Virgo is on the 2nd house cusp, zero Libra on the third and so on. If you are a sun in Aquarius, then zero Aquarius goes on the Ascendant, zero Pisces on the 2nd house, zero Aries on the 3rd and so on.  Whatever sign of the zodiac the Sun is in, zero degrees of that becomes the first house, and then zero degrees of the sign after that becomes the second house, right around the clock. Try that right now with your own chart.

Practice using Solar Charts for success

Task #1 Hand drawn your solar houses chart, placing the planets where they fall with zero degrees of your sun sign as the Ascentant. It might be only marginally different, or maybe wildly different!

astrologywheel1blank

There doesn’t appear to be an option for Solar Houses in Astro.com’s drop-down box, but hand working charts is a wonderful practice and connects you to the symbols by drawing them in. You can down-load and print this blank wheel, or google one of your choice,

NOTE: The technique of putting the Sun sign on the ascendant to create a whole sign house system can be done with ANY of the planets. Your Venus houses puts zero degrees of your Venus sign on the ascendant and then zero degrees of the next sign on the 2nd house … your Mercury houses puts your Mercury sign on the Ascendant (which is always the sigh before, the sign of or the sign after the sun), the Saturn houses puts your Saturn sign on the Asc etc. Each planetary house chart can be used to understand more how the nature of that planet sits in your chart. You’ll see the Solar Houses most often though as the significance of the Sun in our culture (distinction, individuality, life purpose) is elevated.

How does the Solar Chart House System Work?

If you want to write the horoscopes for the day, you do a Solar Chart for noon that day for EACH sign. So there is a chart with Aries on the Ascendant, Taurus Ascendant, Gemini Ascendant etc. Practicing astrologers will do one for Aries and ‘turn the wheel’ to place each signs on the Ascendant, but effectively there is a solar chart for each sign.

Below is the example of the full moon done as a solar chart for Aries and one for Taurus. I didn’t create all 12 sign solar houses, but you get the idea of ‘turning the wheel’.

In writing a horoscope column, one approach is to focus on the solar houses that the sun and moon fall in for each sign: Aries has this lunar event in the 2nd and 8th so we might talk about core values and shared resources. “Money troubles with and ex . . .” With Taurus’ solar house chart, it’s right on the Ascendant so personal desires versus share desires are highlighted. It might be “Partnerships shine a light on your happiness meter …”

Try this yourself, writing your own take, to practice interpreting the daily planets. It’s a valuable exercise.

Solar Chart Houses for natal readings and transits “predictions”

You can play with your own solar houses with transits, checking where major events are occurring by house. For example, I have Mars Rx in my 4th house using the (usual) Placidus system, but in my solar houses it’s going through my 7th! And guess what? I can relate to home energy AND partnership energy!  You can also look at solar versus traditional ascendant charts for natal interpretations.

Don’t think of one being ‘better’ than the other or one being ‘right; and the other being ‘wrong’. Both give us information but with a different emphasis.

You will be amazing at how accurate Solar House Charts can be.

More Solar Chart Examples

Here are two charts of Judy Garland to compare, one done in the Placidus system and the other in the Solar House system. The Solar Chart turns the wheel, but not by much. She still has Uranus in the 10th, but let’s look at the placement of the personal planets to start with.

In her Placidus chart she has Cancer rising and oh boy  . . . she had that watery, emotional, warmth . . . people would say she always looked like she was about to cry when she sang, even uplifting songs. Very Cancer/Kataka ‘shop window’. We might say that Venus in the first house gave her incredible charm, and the 12th house sun, perhaps, expressed through her times institutionalized … the drug abuse and depression (which is of course only one way a 12th house sun might find to express, but the 12th does represent hospitals and institutions and potentially 'dark night of the soul' experiences).

Judy Garland Natal Chart Placidus House System

Judy Placidus

Judy Garland Natal Chart Solar Chart House System

Now let’s check the Solar chart – The stellium of planets in her 2nd house speaks of her VOICE as a talent. Here the sun is in the first house and on stage, people saw her as extremely versatile, flighty, unpredictable.

Her Placidus house chart has Cappy ruling the 7th and the Part of Fortune there which might suggest long-term, enduring and committed relationships in business and marriage. But the Solar chart tells another story. Mars in the 7th in Saggo certainly isn’t always violent/cruel partners but Judy had 5 marriages and reported such aggression in more than one. Where Saggo is in the chart, things expand (more than one?) 'don’t fence me in' and Mars, well, he is the god of war. Maybe she could have partnered with a martial arts academy director and found success and delight, but that’s not the way it went.

JGarland_Natal
Judy Garland Solar Chart

Transits to Solar Chart Houses

Note that in March 1955, when Judy was up for an Academy Award for her performance in A Star is born, Jupiter was conjunct her Venus, Saturn trine her Venus. In the Placidus chart it occurred in the first house, angular and full of portend of success. Everyone expected her to win. But in her Solar Houses we see it falls in the 2nd of core values and self esteem. It was a shock to everyone that she didn’t win the award. At the time, she was in hospital having just given birth to a son. Perhaps the Solar Chart reflects a different kind of success and purpose.

She died of a barbiturate overdose at age 47 with Jupiter/Uranus/Pluto conjunct in the 4th house, either chart. As Jupiter represent expansion, freedom and new horizons, I like to think that Judy Garland found a welcome home.

The best way to understand the Solar Houses system is to use it. Let’s start now with your own charts. Check your house positions of personal planets and compare/contrast. Take a current transits (Uranus in Taurus perhaps) and check where that is in both solar and Placidus houses.

Report your findings, questions and comments below.

See you there!

Secondary Progressions and You

prog_11

What are Secondary Progressions?

Commonly known simply as Progressions, this is a type of ‘transit chart’ with a rich and useful history. Let’s cover the basics so you can jump right in. I think you'll find secondary progressions amazing to work with.

Progression
noun
noun: progression; plural noun: progressions
  1. 1.
the process of developing gradually towards a more advanced state. In astrology it means ADVANCING the chart forward to show the life trends and development for the individual by advancing the chart “a day for a year”.

    ephemeris-am-600x294

    Technical Notes

There are a few ways to progress a chart including solar arc directions, primary progressions, tertiary progressions, converse progressions (progressing backward!). Today, We’ll focus on Secondary Progressions, probably the most commonly used. They are the ones I use 90% of the time.

    Create Your Secondary Progressions

Go to Astro.com and click on extended chart selection. Then choose from the drop-down “Natal and Progressed Chart”. Add whatever asteroids and points you want. I suggest you learn the primary planets first) and click “show chart”.

prog_2pm-300x184From there, if you click it again, you will have the PRINT VERSION, which is the chart you can 1) save to your computer 2) upload to Drop box or photo bucket etc.

Ten Tips for reading secondary progressions

1) Secondary Progressions are ‘a day for a year’

The thing to keep in mind is you are creating a chart based on “a day for a year” where you “progress” the chart forward depending on how old you are. Example: If you were born May 1st, of any year, and wanted to look at your progressed chart for when you turned 26, you count forward in the ephemeris, from the day AFTER your birthday, 26 days, and that shows your progressed planetary positions. (See image #2) If you are 30, it’s the chart done for 30 DAYS after. If you are 50, then 50 days after. The computer (or hand) calculation is more precise, but you can look at the ephemeris for the year in question and get a very good idea of your progressed chart.

2) Slower moving planets don't usually count

What you’ll find right away is that the slower moving planers barely move. Pluto may only change a few degrees in a lifetime, so unlike transits, the OUTER PLANETS are less significant. The progressed Moon, however, moves at the rate of 2.5 years per sign (as the real-life moon travels 2.5 days per sign). The Sun, Mercury and Venus travel about 1 degree a year and Mars Varies.

3) What to watch

The progressed Ascendant, Moon and inner planets are the ones you want to watch. Like any transit chart, always relate the progressions BACK to the NATAL chart. You can read it as a standalone, but ONLY if you think of WHAT has been progressed in relationship to the Natal.

4) Transit versus Secondary Progressions

Transits are the daily motion of the planets. We use them to understand significant inner and outer events. The progressions show the ‘day for a year’ advancement of the birth cart. Here’s how Isabel Hickey in the 1950s described the difference. (Long before ‘law of attraction’ became popularized).

The progressed chart works from within, showing the changes of consciousness occurring in the individual, bringing changes in the outer world. Only by changing our attitudes and consciousness first can we change what will manifest in the world around us. With the support of progressions, we can change our thoughts before they manifest negatively, as we have the power and the privilege of changing events before they “happen”.

I agree with her. The progressed chart can give us powerful insights into what’s coming up and how we might want to THINK about it to deliberately create what we want, using the energy to propel us forward in our lives.

5) The progressed Ascendant

The secondary progression Ascendant moves about a degree a year + or -. If everyone would like to find their progressed Ascendant to start with, we will launch from there. It might be a good time to review some of the qualities of the Ascendant sign, and the identity awareness they bring. It is ALWAYS significant when the progressed Ascendant changes sign. Think of it as a new dressing in your shop window to the world!

signpower

6) The Progressed Moon – Orbs and Aspects

The prog Moon is the fastest moving progressed planet, moving about 1 degree a month.

We only allow ONE degree of orb for progressed aspects (where transits can go up to 10 degrees of orb) so with the moon, you are looking at one month before (the degree before exact), the month of exact and one month after – a three month time frame for the progressed conjunction, or other aspect, vibe. The sign, house and aspect will be significant and relate to your true feelings at the time. For example, when the progressed moon comes up to conjunct your Mars, the month before, of, and after will HEAT up emotions in that area of life, depending on what house it is in. If your Mars isn’t happy ie, you aren’t the boss of you, leading the way to new adventures, you will FEEL it. If you are expressing your Mars, you’ll have strong feelings of joy and bliss! You can’t predict if it will feel ‘good or bad’ unless you know how aligned you are with the core energy of the planets.

The HOUSE the moon progresses through is where the focus is for about 2.5 years. It tells you WHERE you can get in touch with what you really want in new ways. It activates the house! Think of it as a massive core value check in. What feels nurturing to you now?

The best way to see how this works is to check the Prog. Moon in action. Go to your current progressed chart and spot the moon. Plot that in your natal chart and discern:

1) the house/area of life of focus
2) the sign that is wanting to wake up in you (add to your identity)
3) the aspects to natal planets and points, within one degree.
4) some astrologers consider not just the Progressed to Natal aspects but the Progressed to Progressed aspects. I look at them as an overall indicator of change (as when a natal applying aspect comes to exact, or goes out of orb) but focus first on Prog to Natal).

7) The Progressed Sun

The prog sun moves about a degree a year, so contacts from it last about three years – the degree before exact, the degree of and the degree after exact. Think of the progressed sun as shining a spotlight on the house, planet or aspect it connects with. Also note when your prog sun changes signs (every 30 years after the first change). It adds a new flavor to your sense of individuality, purpose and power.

8) Change of Direction

Note when a progressed planet changes direction. You might have been born with Mercury Rx and 20 years later, your progressed Mercury turns direct. Or you might find that when you turn 45, your progressed Venus turns Rx. These changes of direction are always significant. You are able to see, and utilize, the energy of the planet in new ways. For example: My natal Mars is 8 Capricorn rx and it’s been progressed at 26 Sagittarius Rx for most of my life. It will turn direct when I’m 68. I’ll let you know! I was also born with Saturn Rx and when I turned 36 it went direct for the first time in my life. I never really felt free until then!

9) Ingress by Sign and House

When a progressed planet changes signs, either moving from 29 to 0 or 0 to 29 Rx, that is always a BIG shift. Use the new energy to expand your playing field, broaden your perspective and embody the energy the sign represents. Same goes with leaving one house and entering another. What new area of life are you ready to explore?

10) Check list

Here's your secondary progressions check list:

Progressed Ascendant -  What natal house is it in? Sign? Aspects to the natal? Advanced: Note progressed decan and dwads when they change.

Progressed Aspects - to use are the conjunction and opposition. You can consider more, but these are the ones you look for first. They usually matter most.

Progressed Moon – What’s it saying about your feeling body, health, and how you nurture yourself and others?

Progressed Sun – Where’s the spotlight? Are you dancing in it? How’s your individuality and empowerment? Creative self-expression? Accolades?

Progressed Mercury – Where are you applying your curiosity and moving energy forward? Communicating?

Progressed Venus – Living your core values? Playing well with others?

Progressed Mars – Where are you being the boss, standing up for yourself and taking inspired action? Vitality? Energy?

Armed with these basics, let’s explore our progressions in the comments. If you want specific feedback, it helps me to see the natal and progressed charts so pop them up in the gallery if you like.

Happy progression hunting, everyone.

Medical Astrology

MedicalAstrologyHi everyone,

Let’s jump in straight in with a few key points on the ancient practice of medical astrology. And then for or a direct experience, listen to the Astro-Body Scan guided exploration.

The Zodiac in Medical Astrology

First up, each sign links to a particular part of the body, starting with Aries ruling the head and ending with Pisces ruling the feet. Although focus can be placed on powerful health indicators like the Sun, sixth house and the Ascendant alone, it helps to remember that we all have the twelve signs of the zodiac in our charts. By looking at the houses and their associated signs from a health perspective, we can learn about our needs for vitality, and genuine expression in the various areas of life.

Notice how this approach can answer questions about how best to strengthen and nourish our natural energies as we acknowledge each sign according to house position. Understanding what it means to have Aries in the fourth house, as opposed to Taurus there, can lead to a more fulfilling home life, and quite possibly the reduction of any unexplained fevers or headaches. Discovering the difference between Capricorn on the Ascendant as opposed to Gemini can initiate a more creative access to the outer world, and minimize chronic lethargy, depression or problems with the knees and joints.

Looking closely at the signs around the horoscope and how they currently express is one way to ascertain what is not right in life and make meaningful adjustments that lead to a greater sense of well being. By honoring the individual needs of the signs through the houses, the door opens to natural vigor, energy flow and zest for life. Think of it as your own, personal feng shui for well being.

Remember, we are looking at the body and any “dis-ease” or lack of balance as a message, not a diagnosis. Use astrology to approach health in a more holistic way.

For example, the sign Cancer rules the stomach

This water sign has to do with making connections, feeling nurtured and ‘needed’ by others. If my stomach is upset, my nurturing life may be out of balance. With that knowledge I can start to ask the right questions such as, “Am I feeling loved. Am I looking after myself?” Particularly, I look to the HOUSE ruled by Cancer. Am I giving and receiving love and nurturing there? In my own chart, it’s the 11th house so I might ask if I’m feeling loved by friends, or if I am in groups that resonate as my clan or tribe. In this way, tummy trouble helps me look at my life in a new way. The alternative is to take an antacid and hope for the best.

Another good example is a headache

The head is ruled by Aries, the sign of independence and action. Aries likes to initiate projects, start the ball rolling and above all, be the boss. If I get a headache I ask, where am I not being independent and assertive in my life? Where have I taken a subordinate role when really I want to be top dog? I look at the house ruled by Aries to suggest where I really need to be the boss. I can assert my healthy aggression there, or I can take an aspirin. You see how this work?

If we treat aches and pains and even life threatening diseases like spam and ‘bulk delete/treat’ without reading the message, a great opportunity for true well being is missed. Knowing the medicinal zodiac can help highlight were in the chart (in the life) something has gotten out of balance and how honoring the sign ruling that house can be restorative.

Again, Medical Astrology is informative and fascinating, but never a substitute for proper self care and medical attention where appropriate.

Electional and First Meet Charts

c69cc81ad-600x450Hi everyone, ready to explore the amazing branch of astrology known as electional charts?

To get started with this different way of viewing a chart, realize first that it’s still a BIRTH chart, just not of a human being. It’s the birth of a relationship, idea, project or business. Working with these “electional” or Origin/first meet charts can be surprisingly insightful, and revealing.

Quick Definitions:

Horary Charts – Horoscopes drawn the moment a burning questions is asked. Use the time, date and place of the astrologer, the moment THEY hear (or read) the question.

Electional Charts – A chart drawn for the best time to take a desired action. Use the time/date and place of the planned event/signing, ceremony, launch.

First Meet/Genesis/Origin Charts – Horoscopes drawn for the moment of the first meet/date/brainstorm/idea. Here we use the time/date and place of the ppl involved. If it’s face, the “birth place” is clear. If it’s an online “first meet” there are two charts, each with their own local date/time/place.

How it Works

Once the chart is created (on astro.com for free or with your own fav astro software), the fun begins. Here are the basic tools you will need to read an election/origin chart:

  1. A firm understanding of planetary dignities and rulerships, signs, houses, planets and aspects
  2. Objectivity
  3. Non-judgement

What's Next?

Numbers 2 & 3 are very important as much of the old literature on reading electionals, horary and first-meet charts is black and white, good and bad where in reality, we make of the energy what we will. Keep an open mind. If Mars square Uranus falls in the 10th and 7th, it doesn’t mean that the new biz partnership is doomed. You do want to be aware of the kind of approach required, as in not trying to control and manhandle but putting a lot of innovation and empowerment into everything you do together.

How Electional charts work – Like attracts like

We aren’t the way we are because of our birth data. Turn it around. We are born at a particular time because of who we are, and the same holds true for our ideas, our partnerships, our events and ceremonies. None of us come here with a clean slate. We have core values, beliefs, likes and dislikes from ‘before’, and so does anything that has a ‘beginning’ in manifest reality.

Law of Attraction says ‘like attracts like’. Everything in our lives is in alignment with our energy, our vibration. We get what we vibrate, which holds true for book launches, festivals, weddings, dates and brainstorm sessions. Astrology is not in contradiction to this notion. People, places, questions and ideas are born when they are (the sun, moon, and planets in a certain place) because that moment in time is a perfect match to WHAT they are.

How do we read electional charts?

In many ways, we read these charts just like a person’s natal. Working with electional and origin charts are great practice for honing your delineation skills including:

Rulerships

For a very basic tutorial on this, go HERE. If you just need a chart of the rulerships to brush up, see below. We use rulerships to identify the state and action of the relationships/meet-up/event. For example, if Sagittarius is rising in a first-meet chart, we know that Jupiter Rules the moment. We look at where and how Jupiter is placed to learn more about what the connection is all about.

screen-shot-2015-12-11-at-5-55-23-pm-600x405Dignitaries

Not all planets are equally well disposed in each sign. They have their favorites and their challenges. Here is a chart of the classical dignitaries.

In some signs, the power of a planet (energy) is able to flow without any kinks because it is in a natural alignment with that sign. In other signs, it is more convoluted, because the energy of the planet is contrasting or a resistant to the nature of the sign.

screen-shot-2015-12-11-at-6-50-39-pm-600x796

Ruler

Planets in the signs they rule are like being on easy street for expression. Home. Empowered.

Detriment

Planets in the opposite sign to the one they rule are in the ‘shadow’ sign, or ‘contrast/detriment’ or ‘resistance’. Their power is not as free flowing because the sign is not aligned to their mode of expression (put a warrior in a tutu . . .Mars in Libra, or put Saturn, a corporate executive, in a pre-school teacher’ outfit). The ‘detriment’ or shadow sign is always opposite to the sign the planet rules.

Exaltation

Every  planet has one sign other than the rulership sign, that it expresses completely freely in – that is the sign of the exaltation. (Saturn exalted in Libra, Mars exalted in Capricorn)

Fall

The opposite sign of the exaltation is the ‘fall’ or give . . . this shadow sign is also a contrast to the easy alignment, and through contrast, we grow in experience, gain self awareness and become more self-aware. Fulfilled.

So you see, a planet in the sign of his rulership is like a person entertaining in their own house. They feel at ease, natural and in control. In Detriment or Fall, they must entertain in another person’s house. It makes it hard to find things. Harder still to do as they please. –

Other Things to Check

First, look at the electional or first-meet chart Moon and her “applying” aspects. They show the actions that come next. Also note the house position of the moon and the lunar phase (the aspect to the sun). The moon is considered the co-ruler of the chart, along with the Ascendant ruler so we put a strong focus there. Also we look at mutual receptions, and maybe Arabic Parts and some fixed stars and asteroids. Don’t clog the chart up to start with though. Get the essence and then gradually add in other elements IF they have something to offer the situation.

Houses

You will want to have a handle on “where” in the chart we find the other person (if another is involved). This is where you build your journal as a resource, keeping notes on the houses that rule different types of connections – 1st – Self, 2nd – Aunts and Uncles,  3rd house is siblings, 4th, a parent, 5th, first child, lovers, 6th, employee, 7th, “the other” 8th, banker, 9th, guru, teacher, 10th, boss, a parent, 11th, friends, 12th, the unknown other . . . that’s just to get you started.

Symbolism in Electional Charts

Each chart tells a story and as you practice with these electional and origin charts, you’ll start to understand what that story is.

I would love to look at one or two examples from the class to give you all a feel for how to jump in, so make note in the comments of the chart (is it a first meet, launch time or start up of a biz?) and have a link to it that everyone can click on and view. Obviously I can’t run through too many but you all can have a go. Let’s see what examples come up.

Examples

In the meantime, here is a chart of the moment. Let’s pretend it’s a first meet chart and I’m wondering “what to expect” of the energy of the connection.

Okay, now I wish I just met someone at this moment for real LOL! I didn’t time this out but really, look how cool it would be.

screen-shot-2015-12-11-at-7-00-53-pm-600x624

The Reading

I’m a Gemini Sun and there it is, Gemini on the Ascendant, with the Part of Fortune. That’s me! Curious, flirty and having fun.

The chart ruler, from my perspective is Mercury, and he’s not thrilled to be in Capricorn but he’s “dignified” in the 7th house (because it is angular) and is applying to all kinds of fun aspects, ending with a trine to Jupiter and the Node. We might say that though I’d experience some shocks along the way (Mercury applying to a square to Uranus, (Yes , out of orb of 10 degrees but we are looking at all applying aspects by sign) but still, the feeling is all’s well that ends well with Jupiter node.

The 'Other'

“They” (my hypothetical meet up person) are ruled by Jupiter (Saggo on the cusp of the 7th house of “the other”) and in his detriment (Virgo), but again, my ruler and their ruler are applying to a trine by sign. We would say that I have the better standing, the “hand” or upper hand/control, at least at the start.

The Moon is in the last hours of DARK, which isn’t what you’d plan for an electional chart. Make sure that the New Moon is complete, if you are planning an event. But still, Moon conjunct sun in the 7th bods well for this hypothetical connection. I would say we would definitely meet again, though with the dark moon and co-ruler moon square their ruler Jupiter, this intriguing other is committed elsewhere. The dark moon has a 12th house feel to it. We’d be sneaking around, for one reason or another! OR, we are collaborating on a mystery novel! Remember, keep an open mind on how the energy might play out.

Conclusions

All this from just looking at the rulers of the two people involved, and the co-ruler moon.

I hope it whets your appetite for more. Questions? Comments? Ideas?

Let’s talk on the here, or on the GVA Forum.

PS THE author to read if you want to specialize in these kinds of charts is Ivy Goldstein-Jacobson.

The Vertex

vertumnusandpomonabyjean-ranc
Vertumnus and Pomona by Jean Ranc, ca 1720

Hi everyone!

Kim Falconer here with the astrology of the Vertex.

What the heck is the vertex?

The vertex is a theoretical point in the heavens where the ecliptic (the apparent orbit of the Sun around the earth) crosses the prime vertical. That's the plane that runs at right angles to the meridian and divides the celestial sphere from front to back. Already, it sounds fishy, right. A theoretical point?

The vertex/anti-vertex is only theoretical to the degree that the Ascendant and Midheaven are. We know the Ascendant is the point were the ecliptic intersects the horizon (instead of the prime vertical). Then there is the North and South Nodes of the Moon. They are also points of theoretical intersection. In this case, we find them were the path of the Moon rises and falls across the ecliptic. All these examples are  'imaginary' because there is nothing really out there at that point in space. No fixed star, no asteroid, no planet. Not not to forget that the ecliptic itself is the imaginary path of the Sun around the earth.

Still, I put stock in the Vertex and use it on a regular basis in chart readings. Here's why ...

FACTS

The vertex falls on the western side of the chart, with the anti-vertex found exactly 180 degrees away, on the eastern side (the Ascendant side). As with the Ascendant and Midheaven, an exact birth time is necessary to calculate the vertex. There is no point working with it unless you have one. That is the first rule.

What does the word Vertex ‘do’. First, think about what the word means. It comes from the Latin root word vertere, meaning to change, to turn, turn frequently or spin. It also can mean a crowning point, summit, top or crest. Words having this Latin root include vertebrae, (joint, having something to turn on) vertigo (dizzy, disoriented, spun out) vertical (from top to bottom) versatile (doing many things at once, to turn from one thing to another) and verticil (a circular arrangement around a fixed point, a whorl). The common theme here highlights change or movement, from one point to another, where the center remains fixed or the same.

Sparking anything yet?

Mythological correlations to the Vertex

The Roman god Vertumnus has roots in the Latin word vertere, to change, turn or spin. Vertumnus was a lesser god of gardens, fruit trees and seasons. Youthful and alluring (hot-hot-hot), he had the power to change himself into various forms, just as the seed changes from root, to branch to leaf to fruit. Vertumnus used this ability in his (hot) pursuit of the goddess Pomona.

As the myth goes, Vertumnus fell in love with the strikingly beautiful goddess Pomona. Although she rejected all suitors, he fed his passion with the sight of her by changing his form and passing her gardens daily as a soldier, a harvester, a fisherman, etc. Ignoring him, Pomona remained devoted only to the cultivation of fruit trees. Vertumnus persisted and one day he altered his form into an old woman, greeted her with a passionate kiss, and proceeded to enter her gardens.

Vertumnus, (as the matron), talked to the goddess, attempting to convince her of the rewards of relationship and the dangers of rejecting love. The qualities and integrity of the youthful god Vertumnus were discussed. Finally, “she” told Pomona the story of a young man who cruelly took his own life after being spurned by his love. She told of how the gods turned the rejecting woman into stone, but still Pomona was not persuaded.

Exasperated, Vertumnus dropped his disguise and stood naked before Pomona in his true form. She thought she was seeing the sun emerge from behind the clouds and in the glorious light of Vertumnus, she opened her heart and reciprocated his love. Together still, they attend the gardens and fruit tress of the countryside.

The Chance Moment

The theme of this myth centers on a seemingly chance moment where an outstanding event occurs. To Pomona, it was like an epiphany, a sudden turn of fate, a radical awakening of perception. To Vertumnus, it was at first a well planned strategy, then finally an act of spontaneous desperation. Imagine his surprise when Pomona finally received him!

Love, relationship and union are highlighted here, not just in the desire of Vertumnus, but also in the story he told of the young man’s rejection and the consequences that followed. The imagery of the gardens, fruit and vine add to the feeling of ripeness, an event finally ready to happen, a fruitful experience.

These are all themes you can bring to the reading of your Vertex.

How significant is it? That’s the debate, and not all astrologers agree. I like to think of the vertex as a sensitive point linked to fateful encounters with others, sudden epiphanies, turning points in life and a ‘destiny’. Activated, it can feel profound. Extraordinary.

A strongly placed natal vertex (conjunct the horizon, MC/IC, in close aspect to a personal planet, in a critical degree or in the degree of the nodes) will work with more obvious results.

Activating the Vertex

Three things can trigger or activate the vertex:

1) transits

2) other people (synastry)

3) places (astro*carto*graphy).

Transits to the vertex can bring inner and outer events corresponding to a pivotal point, significant encounter with another or a sudden change of perception. The transiting planet activates the symbolism of the vertex, coinciding with a major or minor event. Keeping orbs tight and sticking mainly to the conjunction will be more signigicant. A transiting conjunction from Mars would likely be more noticeable than a transiting trine from Uranus, although sometimes that is not the case. Be flexible. Explore! The magnitude of the effect depends on the prominence of the vertex itself, its relationship to other factors in the chart (aspects) and the occurrence of other transits happening at the same time. Along with transits, explore progressions, converse progressions and directions.

Meetings with significant people, as seen through synastry and composite charts, may also link strongly to the vertex. (Think of people as permanent transits.) When one person’s inner planets or asteroids (Sun through to Jupiter), angles, nodes, vertex or certain Arabic parts conjunct the vertex, there can be a feeling of fate, destiny, rightness or wrongness about the encounter. Something in the contact with that person may have the ability to create profound change over a long or short period of time. The change may be perceived as wonderful, or not so wonderful, but always ‘meant to be.’

Place, our location on the planet can awaken the vertex as seen through relocation charts and astro-carto-graphy. When we relocate, the vertex may become more prominent by changing house or aspect to an angle. The relocation vertex can signify places where meaningful encounters of a particular nature seem to happen more consistently.

Vertex by Sign and House

What about the sign and house position of the vertex? The house positions of the vertex/anti-vertex can offer clues as to where we may experience turning points, meetings with destiny or fateful encounters in life. As noted earlier, the vertex falls usually between the fifth and the eight house, on the western side of the chart, with the anti-vertex 180 degrees opposition.

In the fifth/eleventh house axis, there could be a propensity to experience fateful romantic or creative encounters (fifth house) through contacts with friends or groups (eleventh house). In the sixth/twelfth house axis, the turning point, or spin out, could effect our day by day living, or our link between psyche and soma (sixth house) through contact with those in the helping professions, those less fortunate or through dreams and creative fantasies (twelfth house). In the seventh/first house axis, sudden epiphanies could radically effect socially significant partnerships (seventh house) through an experience of projecting ourselves out into the world (first house). In the eighth/second house axis, destiny may arrive in the form of an erotic encounter or intense research (eighth house) perpetrated by a desire for pleasure, security or peace (second house).

The vertex/anti-vertex by sign can signify the way we may experience activation to this axis. Aries/Libra could indicate issues between personal will and sharing, where Taurus/Scorpio may be about security versus risk. Gemini/Sagittarius could contrast knowledge and vision, where Cancer/Capricorn could emphasize protection versus enterprise. The Leo/Aquarius axis might highlight self-expression as opposed to group participation where the Virgo/Pisces might compare structured boundaries and limitless communion.

Finding the Vertex

The vertex is a point in the horoscope that can indicate a sense of destiny working through another person or outstanding event. It may be stimulated by transits, progressions or directions, other people (synastry/composite) or a change of location. The house and sign position can offer clues as to where the change or turning point may take place and in what way. I encouraged you all to watch the vertex in your own chart, and in others, and work out for yourself how significant it is.

screen-shot-2016-06-22-at-5-32-04-pm-600x256After all, we never know when Vertumnus might enter our garden in the guise of someone else, offering an unexpected turn of fate!

Calculating the Vertex: To find the Vertex by hand, you calculate the Ascendant at your co-latitude. That’s the Ascendant at 90 degrees, minus your latitude. The IC becomes the mid-heaven and, using the table of houses, you look up the “Ascendant” (Vertex) associated with the new MC and latitude. OR, you can go to Astro.com and include it in the many chart options, calculating it on line for free.

Do check out the awesome Dr Z’s: Destiny’s Gate: the Electric Axis for more resources.

Now, on to the fun stuff. Let’s have a look at where your Vertex is and see if you can link any transits, synastry aspect or relocation to a major turning point in life.

If you want to discuss this point with us, jump on the forum. We'll be doing a call on the Vertex in 2019. Email if you want the details.

See you there!
