Sagittarius A

Galactic Center Astrology

With Jupiter in Sagittarius, what better time to revisit the Galactic Center (GC). I wrote about this over at the 11th House Blog in 2013, and this article summarizes that info, and adds to it, especially how the GC might relate to Astro-LOA.

What is the Galactic Center?

A massive anomaly 25,000 light years away, the GC sits at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. Our solar system orbits around this pivotal point, taking 250 million years to circle once. When I say 'point' I mean a space that compasses over 2000 light-years across. Think BIG! It's dark, shrouded, hiding in the direction of the constellation of 27° Sagittarius. Watch this quick NASA vid to get a grounding in the 'what'. And, the magnitude.

How can something that distant have a correlation in our astrology chart? A little history helps reveal the answer.

Discovery of the Galactic Center

Firstly, the GC was discovered by western scientists in 1932 using an early radio-telescope. They were trying to understand the static in the overseas phone lines and found the GC partially responsible. More than that, they put their focus on it. In deliberate creation, we know that what we focus on expands, and this holds true for the GC.

Like the Great Attractor, interstellar dust and the plane of our galaxy hide the GC from sight. But astronomers say it coincides with the radio source called Sagittarius A. Think black hole hundreds of thousands to billions of time larger than our sun. Not surprisingly, it is the source of most of the gravitational energy in our galaxy. Recently, astronomers have measured flaring events at multiple wavelengths coming from the supermassive black hole. Read more here...

Secondly, the Mayan not only were aware of the GC but described it as the Heart of Sky, a Dark Rift. They also called it the Tree of Life. As horizon astronomers, they identified the solstices and the equinoxes, the lunar months. They also tracked the retrograde cycles of Mercury, Venus and Mars. In all of this, Mayan's placed great importance on the GC.  Without a telescope or radio waves. Unfortunately, their knowledge vanished when books and oral traditions were destroyed.

The Vedic Galactic Center

Thirdly, the ancient Vedic tradition tells us that Mula (or Moola) nakshatra is the constellation which translates as “the root.” This from Somya Devi - "As the literal center of the galaxy (when we look past Mula, we are looking into the galactic center), planetary energy here compels us to find the deepest truth within ourselves, our beliefs."  A strong resonance with 27° of Sagittarius.

Symbolism in the Galactic Center

The Galactic Center sits at 27° Sagittarius and moves forward about 1° every seventy years. Also, this is the Leo Decan and Libra Dwad. Read more about the Divisions of the Signs. But, adding the ruler of Leo, the sun (consciousness) and Libra, Venus (connection), we can say this point aligns with expansion, purpose and sharing. It merges the trans-personal drives of Sagittarius with the relationship drives of Leo and Libra.

Ultimately, think of this point as an awakening, a burst of energy that supports the creation of new thoughts and the release of limiting beliefs. If you want to leverage this energy, look to where 26-28 degrees of Sagittarius sits in your natal chart and activate that house and/or planetary placement.

GC Conjunct a Planet or Point

If you have the GA highlighted in your chart in some way, it could mean you are particularly aligned with expansion, explorations into the unknown and bringing discoveries back to share with others. A consciousness lifter!

At the least, it puts added focus in the chart. If it’s in the 3rd house, communicate, write, speak! If it’s conjunct your moon, feel all your connections to life and release old emotions. Conjunct your Mar? Get physical, active and engaged with something that holds high meaning to you. Transits to the GA

How to find the Galactic Center

The Ascendant hits this point once a day as it moves through all 360 degrees of the zodiac in a 24 hour period. Those born with 27° Sagittarius rising have it as their Ascendant in the natal chart.

The moon, of course, transits 27° of Sagittarius once every 28 days as it journeys through the entire zodiac, spending 2.5 days in each sign. But between 0 - 2 times a year, that will coincide with a New or full Moon, tripling the impact of the monthy transit.

This is because every year, on the 19th/20th of December and 17/18 of June, the sun conjuncts or opposes the Galactic Center. Sometimes that will coincide with a new or full moon. Note anyone born between the 18th and 21st of December and the 15th - 18th of June has their sun conjunct or opposed the GC in the natal chart.

Also once a year Mercury and Venus will conjunct the GA, within 30° and 45° of the sun. Mars will be there once every two years. The last time was March 12, 2018, and the next is February 12, 2020.

Jupiter conjuncts the GC once every 12 years and Saturn once every 29 and so on. Check the online empheris to discover when the outer planets will next conjunct this point later this century and on into the next ones.

Transits to the GA 2019

The events to watch in 2019 are transits by the Moon (when new or full), Venus, Jupiter and the Sun. Think of these as triggering, awaking what the GC means to you, by house and aspect to your natal chart. Some say it's an opportunity to 'download' new information, divinely inspired insights. Others say it opens the subconscious minds and lets us release blocks and limiting beliefs. Certainly, it's an opportunity to set intentions to do so!

Dates for 2019

ADET Time Zone

Venus conjuncts 27° Sagittarius TWICE this year. Once on February 1, 2019, and again on November 24, 2019, with Jupiter by less than a degree.

Jupiter conjuncts 27° Sagittarius on November 19, 2019

The Sun conjuncts 27° Sagittarius on December 19, 2019. The full moon conjuncts the GA June 17, 2019 as well.

Mercury conjuncts 27° Sagittarius on December 27, 2019

I see this as tune in on Feb 1 with Venus. Set sky high intentions on November 19 with Ve/Ju conjunct on the 24th, rethink it with Mercury Rx. We'll be exploring this in depth at the time in the Daily Astro-LOA Flash.

Finally, let's discuss this here or on the Member's Forum.

See you there!
